Can you tell me whether the enclosed attachment if a picture of Agnetha?? Or, is it of Anni-Frid (turned blonde?) All kind wishes to you from Jerry

Agnetha & Frida: 1977 Mini Musical

The photo is of both Agnetha (left) and Frida (right). It was taken on ABBA's 1977 tour of Europe and Australia. They are singing 'Get On The Carousel', the fourth song in the mini-musical 'The Girl With The Golden Hair'. During the musical, both girls wore blonde wigs and dressed identically as they were both portraying the same character. Agnetha performed 'Thank You For The Music' solo, Frida sang 'I Wonder' solo, then both sang 'I'm A Marionette' and 'Get On The Carousel'. Incidentally, 'Get On The Carousel' was never released on an ABBA record, but parts of the live performance were included in 'ABBA - The Movie'.

While I don't regard John Tobler's 'Gold' book as the ultimate organ of truth and information, I was curious about four song titles that cropped up: 'It's Alright, Darling', 'It's Been Swell', 'I Just Wasn't Thinking' and one other which escapes me. Tobler suggests that they were written in the late '80s for an EP by ABBA. Is there any remote possibility that these titles refer to actual songs - whether written for ABBA or 'Chess' or Gemini or any other side project? If so, is it possible that they cropped up under different titles on, say, Josefin Nilsson's album? Also, is it true that Elaine Paige recorded 'Just Like That' during the 'Chess' sessions? If so, was it under another title? Does anybody know whether it is closer to the ABBA version or the Gemini version? Curious Tony1. Those four song titles being included in Tobler's book are just another example of how much hearsay and rumour are included in his writings as "fact". Carl Magnus Palm writes on his website http://www.bahnhof.se/~cmpalm/ that "Björn dismissed these titles and the entire story as complete rubbish." There are many supposed "unreleased" ABBA song titles that have been circulating for years that aren't real - I suspect they were invented by fans to attempt to impress others with some sort of "new information" or to pad out stories about alleged cancelled albums.

2. Elaine Paige did indeed record two different demo versions of "descendants" of 'Just Like That' The first was titled 'Just Like That', though apparently the title wasn't actually sung in that version, which was almost the same as the later Gemini version. She also recorded another version titled 'When The Waves Roll Out To Sea' which had almost the same verse as ABBA's version of 'Just Like That' but a completely different chorus. For way too much information on the 'Just Like That' saga, visit abbamouse's little hole on the web at http://members.home.net/abbamouse/id1.html

I have a question that's been bugging me for quite some time. There are official set lists for the 1977 tour and the 1979/80 tours printed in ‘The Complete Recording Sessions’ by Carl Magnus Palm. In his new book ‘Bright Lights Dark Shadows’ (fantastic by the way) he also writes something about the repertoire during the 1973 tour. But of the 1974/75 tours no official set- list has been made available. Do you know which songs were performed and in which order? Thanks, OliverThe songs performed at one particular concert in Eskilstuna (immortalised on bootleg) on the 1975 tour were: Hey, Hey Helen; He Is Your Brother, Hasta Mañana; Rock Me; SOS (the second verse was sung by Frida); King Kong Song; Gonna Sing You My Lovesong; Sitting In The Palmtree; Intermezzo no. 1; Rock'n Roll Band (sung by Frida); I've Been Waiting For You; Honey, Honey; Waterloo; Watch Out;' I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do; So Long. I understand that this was the basic play list for both the 1974 tour of Europe and the 1975 tour of Sweden, except that 'I Do…' and 'SOS' were added for the 1975 tour, replacing two other songs (I don't know which ones unfortunately). There may have been some additional songs at other concerts - some reports mention up to 19 songs were performed on the 1974 tour. Incidentally, the playlists for the 1977 and 1979 concerts were only noted in 'The Complete Recording Sessions' because the concerts were recorded for film and TV and a possible live album.

Is it true that Frida hated Agnetha? Thanks, Dalton, Brasil No, this persistent rumour is definitely not true. Frida has said as much in several interviews in recent years, including in the documentary 'The Winner Takes It All - The ABBA Story'. In the new biography 'Bright Lights, Dark Shadows' she is quoted as saying "Agnetha and I are, and will always be, different as people. That doesn't mean that we didn't like each other a lot… The much discussed animosity has never existed." Agnetha expressed similar sentiments in her book 'As I Am'.

I have a question about the book 'Bright Light Dark Shadows'. When will it be released in Sweden? I know it is available on the net but I prefer to buy it the usual way. Thanks, Evelina, Sweden.

I've heard that the Swedish edition probably won't be published until next year. Perhaps some bookstores in Sweden may import the English edition.
Do you know what has happened to the UK fan club and UK ABBA day in Bristol? abbafan UK

I recently heard on the grapevine that the UK-based ABBA News Service (not actually a “fan club” as such) has ceased operations and so the annual ABBA day in Bristol has been cancelled.

Do you anything about an album from ABBA called ‘ABBAcadabra’? It’s supposed to be a Christmas album edited by them (it was an original concept album, I think) but I don’t know anything else. Have you ever heard something about this? And what about Opus 10? Best regards. Cristian 'ABBAcadabra' is not a Christmas album, but was a musical based on ABBA's songs. It was originally a French language album and television special in 1983. The songs had new lyrics and the story was about well-known fairy tale characters. French singers, mostly children, sang the rest of the songs, though Frida recorded the duet 'Belle' (based on ABBA's 'Arrival') with French singer Daniel Balavoine and also sang the song on the TV special.

At Christmas 1983 'ABBAcadabra' was performed on stage in London (in English), and two singles were released, the only ABBA participation being Frida's duet 'Time' (like 'Belle', based on 'Arrival') with B.A. Robertson. And what about 'Opus 10'? ;-)

I've seen conflicting writing credits for 'I'm Still Alive'. Some sources credit Agnetha only, others credit both Agnetha and Bjorn. Can you set the record straight once and for all, and tell me your source? Many thanks, Dale Richner

According to Carl Magnus Palm's 'ABBA - The Complete Recording Sessions', Björn wrote the lyrics. I have no reason to doubt this information.
I'm a great admirer of ABBA and, having become interested in the group, I'd like to know as many things as possible about them and their music. I've surfed many sites and read several biographies. But there's one thing that keeps on bothering me: why isn't anywhere mentioned the cause of Frida's mother's death? I hope you could tell me that. Lucy.

The simple answer is that no one had ever actually investigated to find out. Various theories and rumours have persisted over the years, including suicide or that she died "of a broken heart". The truth is finally revealed in Carl Magnus Palm's new ABBA biography 'Bright Lights, Dark Shadows' (pages 47-48 to be precise). If you haven't got this excellent book already, I suggest that you do - it's an essential part of any serious ABBA fan's collection.
I would like if possible to get the answer to my question, Agnetha has lost both parents I think, could you tell me how and when, after I read her book I was so shocked to learn this, as I'm an ABBA addict and I didn't know this. Thanks. Micheal Mckane

Agnetha’s mother Birgit died in an accident in January 1994 and her father Ingvar in December 1995. Before their deaths both had suffered from periods of ill health (source: page 511, ‘Bright Lights, Dark Shadows’). I don’t have any further information.
After the success of Mamma Mia! I don't know why nobody talks about the 1984 cult musical: 'ABBAcadabra'. I know there was an original cast recording but the album was never released. Two songs can be found in 'Hey Mr Producer' double CD. The musical was a huge success but expensive to run. That's the reason it was only lasted for one season. Who has the rights of this musical, producer Cameron Mackintosh or Benny and Bjorn?? I don't know why nobody has thought about releasing this album after ABBA revival in 1992? By the way I love ABBA but 'Mamma Mia!' is an awful musical from my point of view. The story is worse than in a South American soap opera!!!!! David C. Suárez Cabrera, Las Palmas de G.C, Spain

Another question about 'ABBAcadabra'!

As I understand it, the musical (as performed at the Lyric Theatre in Hammersmith, London) was only ever planned to run for the Christmas season in 1983. The French cast recording album was indeed released, and I've heard unconfirmed stories that a Portuguese version was also released. I believe the French recording was re-released on CD in the early 90s. I'm afraid I don't know who owns the rights to the musical.

I'm not familiar with the 'Hey Mr Producer' CD you mention, but a quick perusal of the track list on amazon.com doesn't indicate to me that any songs from 'ABBAcadabra' are on that CD - certainly not any of the four songs released on singles. I've never seen a South American soap opera, but I heartily agree with your sentiments about 'Mamma Mia!' ;-)

You can find two songs of the Original ‘Abbacadabra’ 1984 London cast Recording in the 2 CDs album ‘Hey Mr. Producer’. The 2 songs are: ‘I Am The Seeker’ (track 8, disc 1) performed by B.A. Robertson and ‘Like An Image Passing By’ (track 10, disc 2) performed by Elaine Paige. In the booklet inside the CD you will read information about the show by Cameron Mackintosh himself!!! The album is still available through www.dresscircle.com, and Amazon (I suppose).
There was later a 3 hours TV special of the album but no songs of Abbacadabra were performed.
I hope you enjoy the news you have received.
P.S: Some songs of the album were recorded for that special CD because there was no Original cast recording (some of the shows were a flop!!!) but If u read the booklet u will know that the 2 ‘Abbacadabra’ songs are taken from the Original 1984 recording. So we know now for sure that there was a recording. The question is: When is the album going to be released?????? Can you make a little bit of pressure in Internet? Thanks!!!! David Vengador

Obviously you must have a different copy of the ‘Hey Mr Producer’ CD to that available now. I’ve checked several on-line stores, and the only ones that include the track listing don’t show those two songs from ‘Abbacadabra’ (check out
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00000AE2Z/
qid=1004957591/sr=8-2/ref=sr_8_3_2/107-8713542-8458956 and http://www.cdnow.com/cgi-bin/mserver/SID=22647173/

HEY+MR+PRODUCER+%5C+TV+O.S.T./ITEMID=581360

There wasn’t a cast album of the English production of ‘Abbacadabra’ released, though there were two singles: ‘Time’ by Frida (yes, our Frida) and B.A. Robertson/’I Am The Seeker’ by B.A. solo, and ‘Like An Image Passing By’ by Elaine Paige/’When Dreamers Close Their Eyes’ by Finola Hughes. The singles were released in a number of countries, including the UK, Scandinavia and Australia.

I am more than pleased to say the least that Agnetha is planning a new album. She has one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard! My question for you is, will the album be in Swedish or English? Sincerely, Mark

No news has surfaced yet about what language Agnetha's "new album" will be in, if indeed she is going to record one, thought personally I would guess that it would be in Swedish. Keep checking ABBAMAIL's Latest News page (the link is on the left) for any further updates.

1. What concerts did ABBA play in 1981 or 1982. I have just obtained a live in concert CD, that has a full concert, and contains 'Me & I', 'Slipping Through My Fingers', 'Two For The Price Of One'. These tracks were not on the original play list for the 1979 tour. 2. Does anyone know how much the individual members of ABBA are worth? Cheers, Anthony Dowsett, Slough, England

1. The only "concert" that ABBA performed in those years was in a television studio for the TV special 'Dick Cavett Meets ABBA', which is where those three songs and several others were performed. At some later stage (sorry, I don't know exactly when), the 1979 'ABBA In Concert' radio special, which was first broadcast at Christmas 1979, was replayed with these songs from the Dick Cavett special edited in.

2. Whenever the Swedish newspapers report on the activities of those ABBA members living in Sweden, they always end the article with a list of facts and figures which includes details of their personal worth, which I understand is information freely available from the Swedish tax office. I don't have this information at my fingertips, though probably a browse through previous ABBAMAIL Latest News pages will find it.

I desperately want to go to the Frida auction at the end of the month, in the hope of seeing her. I emailed Görel and she said she didn't think she would be attending, but on the website, it says she will. Do you know if she will be there? Thanks, Nicky Knight.

It was advertised that Frida was indeed going to appear at the auction, but unfortunately she pulled out a few days beforehand due to ill health. At the auction a fax from Frida was read out, apologising that she couldn't be there as she was suffering from a sore throat.
I've been searching the net for quite some time now. But I have not found any chat rooms for ABBA fans. There must be thousands of chat rooms for ABBA fans. All I want is one please let me know where. So I could stop pulling the hairs of my head. Thank you for your time. Uriel Arias (ABBA FANATIC)

There are quite a few ABBA chat rooms in various forms. There are several on IRC (Internet Relay Chat) – for details on how to use IRC, go to http://www.mirc.com/. Many Yahoo! Groups mailing lists also host regular chats, and there are chat forums on many other ABBA websites. Check out the “links” section of ABBA World (www.abbaworld.net) > sites by category > fan contacts.

Did ABBA ever perform 'Nina, Pretty Ballerina' live and why was it included on the 'Greatest Hits' album but not on any compilations since? Was it a single or hit somewhere in the world? Same for 'Bang-A-Boomerang'? J McFarland As far as I'm aware, neither of those songs was ever performed live. Both 'Nina' and 'Bang' were single A-sides in France, which is probably why they were included on the first 'Greatest Hits' album. Incidentally, all of the songs on 'Greatest Hits' were single A-sides somewhere, except for one track ('Dance [While The Music Still Goes On]') which was only ever a B-side in a few countries. I guess because those songs weren't "international hits" they weren't included on later "hit" compilations, though 'Bang' and 'Dance' have been included on some budget compilations.

Do you know if 'ABBA The Movie' is available on video in Australia? I understand that it will be released on DVD. Do you know when? (I don't own a DVD player but may go and buy one!) Also, is the Bandstand TV special ABBA did here in 1976 available on video? Thanks. Melissa The question about 'The Movie' has been answered in a previous Ask Ian column (several times), but the short answer is: no, it has never been released on video in Australia, and yes, there are plans to release it on DVD next year. Have a look back through previous columns through the link at the bottom of this page for more information. The 1976 Australian television special 'The Best Of ABBA' has never been officially released on video, and I don't imagine that it ever will be.

Do you know, is there any chance to get a video or something of the Eurovision Song Contest 1974 where ABBA performed? I would love to see them, cause it was an important night for their whole career. Thanks Susanna Finland I'm sorry, but I don't know where you might get a video of the whole contest. Several ABBA videos have one or the other of ABBA's two performances of 'Waterloo' from the contest, including 'ABBA 1974 - 1982 Video Biography' and 'The Winner Takes It All - The ABBA Story'. They've also been played on countless ABBA television specials over the years.

I was reading your Ask Ian column on ABBAMAIL and ran across the post asking info on ‘ABBA - The Video Biography / 1974 – 1982’ I would reply directly to the person asking the question, but their email isn't listed. Perhaps you can pass along the info or have them email me. It was released in NTSC format. I have it. I bought it as a Japanese import about 10 years ago. I don't know if anyone still sells it now. I think the name of the place I bought it through was called Laser Island Imports. But I can't be sure and I'm not sure if it's still in business. I'm not sure which produces it. Both Virgin Music Video and Pioneer LDC are on the cover box.

You might want to pass along to the person who originally asked about it that except for the ‘Dancing Queen’ performance... the Royal performance with the fancy dresses and the Eurovision performance, there is not a whole lot you can't get off of other videos. This particular video is has info scrolled across the screen which can be a little annoying. So the person might not want to kill themselves over searching for it. If she really needs to have this video, I can make her a copy. Just tell her to contact me at this email address privately. Thanks. Yours truly, James Bachmann

As a huge fan, I remember watching the 1979 BBC production 'ABBA in Switzerland'. Do you know if the BBC still has this show in their vaults and would have any plans to show it again or release it on DVD/video? Brian Murray

The BBC still has the special tucked away in their vaults but I doubt that they would ever release it on video.
At school I am doing a project on ABBA. Could you please send me loads of information on ABBA that I could use for my project I would be most grateful. Thank you.I'm sorry, but I can't send you "loads of information" - I just don't have the time or inclination. I recommend that you seek out some ABBA websites (check the links section of ABBA World - www.abbaworld.net) or get some books on ABBA, particularly the new biography 'Bright Lights, Dark Shadows' by Carl Magnus Palm.

What involvement if any does Agnetha or any other member have with their "Official" websites?? Have any of them been involved with the ABBA site as well?? Brian Foster I don't believe that Agnetha has any involvement in her "official" website www.agnetha.net, which is maintained by fans, despite its "official" title. Björn had some involvement in the creation of the official ABBA site www.abbasite.com, but exactly what I don't know - whatever his involvement was doesn't seem particularly obvious. Björn is an investor in Fame Studios www.famestudios.se/, who are currently working on the updated version of ABBA - The Site, which is expected to be online (finally!) in November this year.

Could you tell me any background info on a song called 'Sensuella Isabella', supposedly performed by Frida and Tomas Ledin for Norwegian Television???? For example what year was it broadcast, on what bootleg is it to be found and how did it sound??? All info appreciated, best regards Remko'Sensualla Isabella' was a Swedish language single released by Tomas in 1981. As far as I know, Frida did not sing backing vocals on the single, though I believe Benny did play keyboards (as far as I can figure from the Swedish biography on Tomas' official website). Tomas performed the song on the Swedish television show 'Lite grand i örat', which was a four part variety series hosted by Frida and Claes af Geijerstam and filmed at the Grand Hotel in Stockholm in August 1981. Frida joined the backing choir for this and some other songs performed. This particular show was filmed on 20 August, but I believe it was actually broadcast some weeks later. I'm not aware of it being on any bootlegs.

1) I've read that a Spanish version of 'Waterloo' was recorded. True? Has this ever been released anywhere? I also remember seeing advertised in Record Collector (UK) a Spanish recording of 'The Winner Takes It All'. This was also mentioned in 'ABBAMania: The Singles'. I doubt that it exists since I've never read any other reference to it in any of the "official" ABBA books. Any info? 2) Are there any plans for B&B to work with Josefin Nilsson again? Her album was so incredible. Has she recorded anything since? I guess the album didn't sell well or there would have been a follow-up already. 3) Is there any reason the original Gemini album is no longer available on CD? It seems that all the other ABBA related projects are available even if only in Sweden. I was lucky enough to get this a few years back for a relatively reasonable price. I think it's far superior to the 'Geminism' album. Any idea why it never was reissued? Geoff Carpenter Los Angeles1. A Spanish version of 'Waterloo' was planned to be recorded (in Madrid, Spain during ABBA's visit to that city between 20-22 May 1974), but it didn't eventuate. It's unknown whether the Spanish lyrics were actually written ('ABBA - The Complete Recording Sessions', page 39). There is a theory that a Spanish recording of 'The Winner Takes It All' was planned. According to the theory, the Spanish translation of the title on the Spanish 'Super Trouper' LP, '¿Va Todo al Ganador?' is not a direct translation - apparently, it translates to 'Everything Goes To The Winner', while other translated song titles were near direct translations to Spanish.

So, the theory says, a Spanish version may have been planned (or even written). I think there may have been a Spanish cover version at some time with this title (or something very similar). Pay a visit to The Ultimate Spanish ABBA Page http://www.geocities.com/Eureka/Plaza/2324/ for more on these two songs' theories.

UPDATE TO ANSWER:
You are completely wrong to suggest that other translations of ABBA hits were near direct translations. Whilst most on 'Gracias Por La Musica' were, 'Felicidad' tranlsates loosely as 'Celebrate', 'No Hay A Quien Culpar' as 'We are Not To Blame' and 'Se Me Esta Escapando' as 'Escaping Me'. The tiles on the ‘Gracias Por La Musica’ album were more straight forward and easier to translate. Stephen Curry, Londonderry.

My answer to that question referred only to the Spanish translations of the English song titles printed on the ‘Super Trouper’ LP (i.e. the songs were in English but the titles were in Spanish). This information came from The Ultimate Spanish ABBA Page http://www.geocities.com/Eureka/Plaza/2324/, which was the source of the theory about the possible Spanish recording of ‘The Winner Takes It All’. I don’t know Spanish at all, nor do I know just what the Spanish translations of the songs on ‘Super Trouper’ were – I was taking the information on that site at face value. Hope that clears up any confusion.

2. Josefin Nilsson is playing the role of Svetlana in the upcoming Swedish production of 'Chess', premiering in Stockholm in February 2002. There's no word at this stage on whether there will be a Swedish cast recording.

3. As I understand it, the only reason that 1985's 'Gemini' album hasn't been re-released is because PolyGram "forgot" about it. I'm not aware if there are any plans to re-release it now.

Have the background lyrics that run through the choruses of 'Chiquitita' and 'Under Attack' been deciphered by anyone? I find it almost impossible to understand both sets of background lyrics. I think the background melody in 'Chiquitita' especially would be interesting to hear on its own. Thanks! Tom

There are a couple of websites where fans have endevoured to work out those backing lyrics - Lovelight - The ABBA Lyrics Page http://www.lovelight.dk/ and ABBA - The Awesome Foursome http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Vine/7993/. I haven't actually checked these lyrics against the songs myself to see if they are correct.
Just a quick question: Do you know the actual place where Frida lived in Switzerland? Was it Misery? Thanks for your help. Laszlo Arvai, New York, USA

I believe she lived in Fribourg, which appears to be not far from Misery http://www.auction-frida.ch/map.html

I would just like to add some details about Frida's life in Fribourg. Fribourg is the name of a Swiss town (Fribourg in French, Freiburg in German) and also the name of the province (canton, as we say in Switzerland) for which it is the capital town. Just like some other Swiss provinces it is a bilingual canton/province, two third of its territory is French-speaking, the rest is German-speaking. 4 languages are official in Switzerland: German is the most common (it's actually a string of different German dialects that people speak), it is followed by French, Italian and Romanche. The lingustistic "border" between French and German follows more or less the Sarine river which surrounds Fribourg's old town (the river makes a kind of curl around the old town, which is quite beautiful with lots of historical buildings). Frida lived in the canton/province of Fribourg, but not in the town. Her house was quite isolated on a hill called Ruefsguet, which is located in the municipality of Rechthalten. This village is about 10 kilometers east from Fribourg, in a German-speaking district. The hill is outside the village, one or two kilometers further east when you drive from Fribourg. Misery, where the auction took place, is another small village in the same canton of Fribourg, it is also located in the countryside, but not in the same area: it is 9 km. west of the town. In contrast to Rechthalten, Misery is a French-speaking place. Frida's late husband Ruzzo Reuss had his architect office in the center of the town of Fribourg, rue de Morat (this is the name of the street). Marc

AND

I live not far away where Frida lived in Switzerland. I just want to say you that Frida didn't lived in Freiburg. She lived in the small village "Rechthalten". In a farm in the middle of the fields and Swiss cows. This village isn't far away from Freiburg. 15 minutes by car. Freiburg is a small city in the border of the French and German part of Switzerland. Ruzzo work at Freiburg. In French you say "Fribourg". Misery is a small village in the French part. But Frida never lived in Misery. Bye bye Monique

Thanks for the further information, Marc and Monique. No one knows their own region better than a local ;-)

I have a question regarding the ABBA re-releases: why didn't Universal include 'You Owe Me One' on the CD 'The Visitors' anymore even though the remastered CD released in 1997 included that song? Why wasn't 'I Am The City' included either, even though there was talk of doing so? Thank you very much. Best, Toby Strebel (USA)

AND

Why did Benny and Bjorn request that 'You Owe Me One' not be included on any of the remasters? I've always liked the song, though I can see that compared to the rest of 'The Visitors' and its bonus tracks it sounds a bit "fluffy". I scanned the website for a reason but couldn't see one. Can you help? Geoff Carpenter

AND

Hi I'm From México and I have a question about the new remasters. Why 'You Owe Me One' is not on any of the new CDs? Why did Björn and Benny refuse to release that song on CD? I love that song! Diego Toscano, México

It does seem strange that 'You Owe Me One' was included on the 1997 remastered version of 'The Visitors' and not the 2001 version, but apparently the Bs themselves vetoed its inclusion. I don't know why, though Benny is quoted in 'ABBA - The Complete Recording Sessions' as saying "Once we had finished that track I remember thinking 'don't care much for that one'.", so that's quite likely something to do with their decision.

I don't really think it's anything to do with it sounding "out of place" with the more sombre songs on the rest of the CD. It's a pity that it wasn't included for the sake of completeness (all the other B-sides were on the 2001 reissues) - I love the song too, and it's one of the few "fun" ABBA songs of the last couple of years. I don't believe that 'I Am The City' was ever slated for inclusion, despite the immanent deletion of 'More ABBA GOLD'.

Do you know where I can purchase online or otherwise ABBA look a like show costumes. Thanks SueNo, I'm sorry, but I don't know anywhere that sells ABBA costumes. Many fans (and "tribute" groups) have created their own using photographs as their models.

Hello, I would like to know if Benny and Bjorn have plans for a future 'Mamma Mia!' production in Latin or South America? Fernando Wend

Not that I'm aware of. At the moment the only possible future productions that have been mentioned include a tour of Australia (once the Melbourne run has finished), The Netherlands, Japan and Sweden.
I have questions about the words, for example: is the cover from the album 'ABBA', a performance based from the words of the song 'Man In The Middle'?? Is 'Nina, Pretty Ballerina' the predecessor of 'Dancing Queen'?? In other words: the words of 'Dancing Queen' are based in the words or 'Nina Pretty Ballerina'?? Jose Arias Cano. Fan from Colombia, South America.

I don't think there's any connection between 'Man In The Middle' and the cover of the album 'ABBA'. I would guess that the idea for the album cover (by Sten-Åke Magnusson) was to show ABBA in "glamourous locations". Similarly, I don't see any connection between 'Nina' and 'Dancing Queen' beyond the concept of dancing females. Besides, Nina, who works in an office, is obviously much older than the dancing queen, who is "young and sweet, only 17".
I bought the 2001 reissues (digipak) and I'm very pleased with them. Great booklets, great photos (especially in the booklet of 'Ring Ring' - Björn and Benny baking cakes in the kitchen) but being from Germany I was very pleased with the lyrics in the booklets because in some cases they even printed the background vocals or lines I never really understood and which weren't printed on the original album sleeves (like "I thought that our love was at end..." in 'As Good As New'). But despite the booklets being just wonderful there are still three background vocals that really drive me crazy because I cannot find out what the words are. The first one is 'Chiquitita': "you were always sure of yourself/now I see you've broken your feather" and then Then are the voices of Frida and Agnetha singing something like "crying humming birds see sad" I never get it right. The same goes for the second part of the chorus - "but the sun is still in the sky and shining above you" and then "mmh, the sun is shining..." Maybe you can help here. The second one is 'One Of Us'. After the first part of the chorus which leads to the line "wishing she was somewhere else instead" there are background vocals which to my ear sound like "been a lot frustrated in the half bed", hahahahah. So I need help here too. The last song is 'Two For the Price Of One'. The first part of the chorus is simple but when they repeat it for the second time and the background vocals start I just don't understand what they are singing - it's definitely not a repetition of the words that the lead vocals sing. Maybe you can put my mind to rest. Thanks, Oliver

Some of those background lyrics are pretty hard to understand. As mentioned earlier in this column, there are a couple of websites where fans have endevoured to work out those backing lyrics - Lovelight - The ABBA Lyrics Page http://www.lovelight.dk/  and ABBA - The Awesome Foursome http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Vine/7993/ though I've just checked both for these songs, and I'm not quite sure if they're right.
As for Benny and Bjorn being so adamant about releasing unreleased songs I really don't understand why that is, I mean, they released one 'Chess' tune three times, namely as 'The Deal', as 'Florence Quits' and 'No Contest' and there are some other 'Chess' songs which they released a different version of when they released the Broadway version. They also didn't mind using parts of 'One Night In Bangkok' for Gemini's 'Ghost Town' and for Josefin's 'Midnight Dancer' as well as parts of 'Nobody's Side' for Josefin's 'We Won't Be Going Anywhere'. So why are they so reluctant to release 'Monsieur, Monsieur', 'Rosalita', 'Under My Sun/Rubber Ball Man', 'I Am An A', 'Get On The Carousel', and the first versions of 'On And On And On', 'Like An Angel Passing Through My Room', 'Dancing Queen' and 'Does Your Mother Know'. that's exactly the same thing. Bjorn And Benny released songs with other artists which featured parts of songs they had written previously and they also released first and later versions of songs from 'Chess', so why would this be any different from doing the same thing with ABBA songs? And Agnetha let Kicki Moberg release 'I'm Still Alive' in Swedish, so what's the problem with her live version? I also really don't understand why Benny and Bjorn never recorded the superb song 'Agadir Till Bergshagen' at least with Gemini or Josefin, I mean it may not have been suitable for 'Chess', but it would have been a perfect piece for one of them. Many regards, Toby Strebel

It's not uncommon for recurring themes to be used in musicals. Similarly, reworking songs in an existing musical for a new production is quite common. As well as your mentioned examples on the 'Chess' album, the 1990 production in Sydney had the chorus of 'One Night In Bangkok' pop up in half a dozen variations. But musicals are a completely different thing to "pop songs", especially unfinished recordings such as the many examples you've listed.

I don't know about any of the 'Chess' songs you mentioned being rehashed for songs by Gemini or Josefin Nilsson, as I'm not particularly familiar with their albums. Something that you forgot to mention in your extremely detailed question is that the several songs on Benny's albums 'Klinga mina klockor' and 'November 1989' were later used in 'Kristina från Duvemåla', which itself has many pieces of music repeated. However, reusing already released songs is also an entirely different kettle of fish to reusing tunes from unreleased/unfinished recordings.

As for 'I'm Still Alive', there are conflicting stories that it was not actually recorded when ABBA's concerts at Wembley Arena in London were filmed in 1979. So a "releasable" version may not even exist. I don't know why ABBA never attempted to record it in the studio though. I have no idea why 'Agadir till Bergshagen' never saw the light of day - obviously the Bs weren't happy with it. Or perhaps during later songwriting sessions they'd forgotten about it.

Have a few Questions about our beloved quartet ABBA Q-1: Did Agnetha finish the new album she was working on? Or did she had a slight hesitation and canceled the whole project? Q-2: Is it true that Benny released a new music CD? Where can I obtain this new CD from? Q-3: Will there really be a release of 'ABBA The Movie' on a DVD including some never released before Live songs from 'The Movie' plus all the hits of 'ABBA GOLD' CD content? Q-4: Where can I find a high quality of the following songs A) 'Get On The Carousel' B) 'I'm an A he's a B' C) 'Just Like That' D) 'Just A Notion' E) 'Sommar Sommar' F) 'I'm Still Alive' and some other unreleased songs for the Group Q-5: where can I find an original copy of 'ABBA THE WINNER TAKES IT ALL' Videotape? can't find it in the US and I must find it in the US. ''Your friend in ABBA" Steve Cant1. The latest "news" on Agnetha's "comeback" is that she has made 18 demo recordings, but the project has been put back until February next year due to the illness of one of the team members. Keep an eye on ABBAMAIL's Latest News page for any further developments.

2. Benny has indeed released a new CD, 'Benny Anderssons Orkestra'. It's available from the ABBF Record Service http://www1.tip.nl/~t097528/  or Sweden-based on-line stores such as Skivhugget - http://www.skivhugget.se/

3. This question about 'The Movie' has already been answered several times (including once in this very column). There are plans for "bonus features" but at this stage I don't know what they are. A DVD of all of ABBA's promo clips (music videos) is planned, possibly for release before the end of this year.

4. It's hard to get "good quality" recordings of those songs. Most of them have appeared in various conditions on a plethora of bootlegs. The full version of 'Get On The Carousel' is on the bootleg 'One More Toast' available from ABBAMAIL (click the Merchandise link on the left). 'I Am An A' and 'I'm Still Alive' were both on ABBAMAIL's 'Live At Last', which has sold out. A full recording of 'Just A Notion' has never surfaced that I'm aware of, though a couple of extended versions (i.e. the excerpt in 'ABBA Undeleted' repeated) are floating around. There is no such ABBA song as 'Sommar Sommar'.

5. I thought that 'The Winner Takes It All' video was available in the US, but perhaps not. It's definitely been released in Canada. The Canadian based HMV site http://www.hmv.com/  lists it as currently available. It's recently been released on DVD in the UK (Region 2), but I've not heard of any plans to release it anywhere else in that format as yet.

I have a question regarding the new ABBA remasters. I have checked out HMV's Japanese website and they have mentioned the new remasters for release in late August/early September. However, their tracklistings for 3 of the albums differ from the UK releases. According to the site, it claims that:- * Voulez-Vous - will have 4 bonus tracks - Summer Night City / Lovelight / Dreamworld / Gimme Gimme Gimme * Super Trouper - will have 3 bonus tracks - Elaine / Put On Your White Sombrero / On & On & On (Video Version) * The Visitors - will have 5 bonus tracks - Should I Laugh Or Cry / The Day Before You Came / Cassandra / Under Attack / You Owe Me One. Please feel free to logon to http://www.hmv.co.jp and search for ABBA. Please can you confirm that this is correct and that the Japanese market is going to get the above extra tracks. Can you also let me know when the Jewel case versions of the remasters are going to be released in the UK. The digipaks are in stores now, but there's no sign of the jewel case versions. Thanks for your help. Regards Mahen (London, England)

These tracklistings come from an early list of potential bonus tracks for the 2001 reissues, before the tracklistings had been finalised. I don't know how this early list got out, but several websites have used this information. The versions of the CDs being released in Japan will have the same bonus tracks as everywhere else. From what I've heard, the jewel case versions of the 2001 reissues may not be released in the UK at all, though apparently the digipaks have already been deleted, so perhaps the jewel cases will replace the digipaks in UK record shops.
I would like to know when and if 'Chess' is going to be released digitally remastered, as 'ABBA The Movie' will be released next year and the new live album as well is there any where at Universal that fans can send emails to so they release the complete Australian Tour on double CD as they are tying it in with 'ABBA The Movie'. In a few years time then they could release the complete UK tour on double CD as well of the complete show on DVD. Thanks for your time, Marcus

The 'Chess' question has been answered previously (short answer: there are currently no plans to remaster 'Chess'). As I wrote in response to a question in a previous column, it's highly unlikely that any "full concerts" will ever be released in any format. Indeed, there are questions on whether all the songs on the 1977 and 1979 tours were even recorded and/or filmed. I'm sorry, but I do not have contact details for Universal.
Can you tell me, which song is released in the new album releases as unreleased track?? Best wishes, MarkusNone of the bonus tracks on the 2001 reissues are "previously unreleased", though the remix of 'Ring Ring' included on 'Waterloo' has never officially been released on CD before (and before then, was only available on the US and Canadian 'Waterloo' LP released by Atlantic).
