I was just in an English ABBA Site and read that the video ‘The Winner Takes It All’, which was televised has been re-released with extra footage up to 90 mins. Has this version been released in Australia as yet? Thank you, FredYes, that video was released in Australia in March 2000 – the quoted running time on the cover is 89 minutes. Though the cover (and in Australia, a sticker as well) proclaims that the tape contains “30 minutes of extra footage”, it’s actually around 40 minutes longer than the version screened on TV in Australia. In fact, in each country it was screened in, the documentary was slightly different, running anywhere between 50 and 90 minutes, though none of the broadcast versions was the same as the video. However, the video is the same worldwide. It should still be available locally, though I haven’t noticed it in the shops lately. If you can’t find it in the shops, HMV Australia (http://www.hmv.com.au/) lists it as still available.

Can you tell me when the demo of 'Every Good Man' was recorded and any of the circumstances surrounding it? Was it an ABBA demo, a Chess out-take, or something completely different? Darren Lloyd‘Every Good Man’ was apparently recorded circa January 1983. At the time, Agnetha was at Polar Music Studio recording her album ‘Wrap Your Arms Around Me’, while Björn and Benny were also there recording demo tracks for their musical project, which of course became ‘Chess’. Wanting to hear what the songs they were working on sounded like with vocals, they asked Agnetha to record the demo since she was in the studio, and she obliged. It was never intended to be an ABBA song. You can read a bit more about this on Carl Magnus Palm On The Web (http://www.bahnhof.se/~cmpalm/bookfaq.htm)

First, thanks for such a wonderful opportunity to ask a question about my fave group :)).  Well, in fact, I have 2 questions and they are: 1) Who is talking at the beginning of "Move On", is it Bjorn? 2) Which languages do all the ABBA members speak apart from Swedish? (Did Frida know Spanish, French and German and did Agnetha know German?) Thanks a lot! Laila Buligina

You’re welcome Laila, and glad to see you’re taking advantage of our new feature (only on ABBAMAIL!).

First question: Yes indeed, that is Björn talking his way through the first verse of ‘Move On’, putting on a quite thick and deep “American” accent. It has been said that Björn was just “fooling around” when this verse was recorded, and it was intended that the verse would actually be sung (as it was on the Spanish version ‘Al Andar’), but ABBA liked the effect and decided to keep it. Whether that story is true or not is anyone’s guess.

Second question: I really have no idea what languages the ABBA members can speak (aside from English and Swedish, of course). There are many recorded interviews with Björn speaking German, and he apparently “excelled” at languages in school. When ABBA were recording their songs in other languages (especially Spanish), they had grammar coaches to help them with the pronunciation. I have read of Frida learning other languages, notably German after she met her father in 1977, but I have no idea how proficient she became in the language. I have no idea whether Agnetha knew any German when she recorded several singles in that language in the late 60s, or whether she was coached.

Early this year it has been reported that Benny and Orsa Spelmän will record a new album this year. What do you know about this project? Will such an album be released this or next year? Maybe you have any closer informations! Kindest Regards, Harry Ehler

What a coincidence! This very week Who Weekly in Australia reports that Benny will be releasing “a new folk music album” later this year. Other reports say that it will be released “in a few weeks”. But I haven’t heard any firm date as yet.

Can you tell me which members of ABBA will be present at the ‘Mamma Mia!’ premiere in Melbourne on June 9? I know that Björn will be there, but I have also heard that Benny and Anni-Frid are also expected to be there. Do you know anything about this? Carolyn Poljski Melbourne Björn will definitely be there – he’s already in Australia, and has spent a couple of days in the Adelaide region before going to Melbourne. It has been speculated that Benny and Frida would also be at the premiere, but latest reports indicate that Benny will be tied up in Sweden with the upcoming ‘Kristina’ concert tour, and apparently Görel Hanser will also be involved with this. It seems increasingly that Frida will be making the trip without “the safety of numbers” if Benny and Görel were there. Keep a lookout on ABBAMAIL’s “Latest News” page for updates as they come to hand.

In ‘ABBA - The Book’ I read that Agnetha was chosen as the figurehead for a Nonsmoking campaign in March of 1981. It says there that she was an unusual choice since she was a heavy smoker. I always thought she quitted smoking after the operation on her tonsils in December of 1975.Now my question: did she quit smoking in 1975 or not? Or did she quit but later on started smoking again? Thanks, Susanne, Canada

Yes, Agnetha did take part in the “Non Smoking Generation” campaign in 1981, but hit headlines around the world just after the campaign started, when she was photographed at dinner with her latest boyfriend, enjoying an after dinner cigarette (a double-whammy story!). It was written in many ABBA biographies that Agnetha quit smoking after having her tonsils removed at the end of 1975, but there are quite a few photographs much later than that of her with cigarette in hand. I really have no idea when/if she gave up smoking, or if she gave up and then started again.

Hi, could you tell me if it is possible to buy any copies of ‘The Dick Cavett Show’, in which ABBA appeared. Sadly, I am too young to have seen the original version, and would like to know if an actual copy is for sale anywhere.

Secondly, I read a reply about the ‘Opus 10’ album, but the link to 'I'm Still Alive' does not seem to work. I was wondering if I could download this song from anywhere else on the web, maybe even the version by Kiki Moberg (is that right?) Thanks!! Charlotte Gerrish

The TV special ‘Dick Cavett Meets ABBA’ has never officially been released on video, but it has circulated around the fan community for many years. You can buy the special from ABBAMAIL's merchandise service.

Off the top of my head, I don’t know of anywhere where ‘I’m Still Alive’ could be downloaded. It was included on the bootleg CD ‘Live! At Last’ (and many others), which unfortunately is currently unavailable.

I've always been wondering with whom Frida's children Hans and Lise-Lotte grew up: Frida or Ragnar (their father) and with whom Benny's children Peter and Helen grew up: Benny or Christina (they mother)? Thanks, Susanne, CanadaWhen Frida and Ragnar separated, Frida moved to Stockholm while the children remained with their father. Similarly, Benny’s children lived with their mother. In later years, all four children would live part time with Benny and Frida, and part time with their other parents. Keep an eye out for Carl Magnus Palm’s new biography of ABBA, ‘Bright Lights and Dark Shadows: The Real Story Of ABBA’, to be published in September 2001. The early lives of the ABBA members are well documented.

My name is Adriana and I just have a question regarding this apparent new single thing that Agnetha was meant to release. I remember hearing something about Agnetha releasing new material at the beginning of the year before I came to the Holy Land (i.e. Sweden), and I was wondering if anything eventuated. Even though I'm here in Sweden, I haven't heard anything about it, and if she has released something, then I'll have to have a look around over here before I come home. Hejdå, Adriana Campbell.

No, there have been no new recordings released by Agnetha. About every six months or so for the past year and a half stories have surfaced (usually from her manager/business adviser Staffan Lindé) that she is listening to new songs/has written new songs/is recording demos/is planning a new album/is recording a new single – take your pick of which story you prefer. But there’s been no definite announcement that she is indeed recording or that any new single/album will be released.
I hope you can give me some information. I remember in ‘The Movie’ a song that stopped and started and contained the lyrics "get on/off the carousel etc". Was this ever released on disk etc? Peter Rickard This song is ‘Get On The Carousel’. It was the fourth song in the mini-musical “The Girl With The Golden Hair”, performed on the 1977 tour of Europe and Australia. When it came time to record ‘The Album’, the song was dropped from the mini-musical line up, and part of the chorus melody was used in the song ‘Hole In Your Soul’ (the bridge: “aha, you paint your world and use all colours” etc). ‘Get On The Carousel’s inclusion in ‘The Movie’ was therefore a surprise, and a favourite part of the film for many fans. It has never been officially released in any form outside of ‘The Movie’. Though like so many other unreleased songs, has appeared on many bootleg CDs. A full live recording is available on the bootleg ‘One More Toast’, available from ABBAMAIL. Click on the “Merchandise” link to the left.

I am Peter Vyhnal from Czech republic and I want to have contact with all the ABBA fans all over the world. Could you help me? Best regards from PeterThat’s easy – join an ABBA e-mail list or other on-line forum! There are dozens to be found on the Internet. Of course there’s ABBAMAIL, the premiere ABBA mailing list, but there are several others that you may find interesting – check out the “muse” section of www.abbaworld.net for a review of the better ones.

Do you have or do you know where I can get posters (full size) of the 'Arrival' cover shot with the chopper and any of Agnetha. Hope you can help. Thanx heaps Steve Howden In the late 70s and early 80s there were of course many ABBA posters available around the world. The best were printed by Scandecor in Sweden, and widely available around the world. In late 1976 there was one of the inner sleeve photo from ‘Arrival’ (ABBA standing in front of the helicopter in front of a bright orange sunset), and they also released several of Agnetha solo, both during the ABBA years and later as a solo artist. But of course, that was a long time ago, and they’ve been long out of print. I don’t know of anywhere that sells posters like you’re looking for these days – there are a couple of places on the net that sell group posters, but not the sort of pictures you’re after. I’d suggest try the on-line auction sites like eBay (www.ebay.com) – quite a lot of vintage ABBA merchandise can be found amongst the drek.

I have been ABBA fan for a long time and would like to know some information about them in what they are doing now etc. Is it possible please if you can inform me in any way you can regarding their fan club, merchandise, latest news. Thank you. Marsha There’s way too much history to fit it all in here. However, most recently Björn has been heavily involved with the musical ‘Mamma Mia!’ in the UK, USA, Canada and Australia, and is also working on an English translation of the most recent musical he wrote with Benny, ‘Kristina från Duvemåla’. Benny has recently recorded another album of Swedish folk music to be released later this year, and is also involved with a concert version of ‘Kristina’ touring in Sweden in June. Agnetha is still retired from public life, though rumours regularly circulate that she is planning to record (or is recording) a new album. Frida has also retired from the music business (again), though in recent months she has been seen at many public events. There are lots of sites on the internet where you can find quite detailed biographical information on what the former members of ABBA have been up to since the group broke up - check the “links” section of  www.abbaworld.net. You can get all the latest up-to-date information on ABBAMAIL’s “Latest News” page - just click the link on the left. The Official International Agnetha, Benny, Björn, Frida Fan Club is has a website at http://abba.muziek.net/. You can find information about the club there.

I want to use one of ABBA's songs for a short movie and I need to get in touch with them about the copyrights. Would you have any information for me? Thank you very much, Manon Bordeleau

I recommend that you contact your local office of Universal Music, which holds the rights to ABBA’s recordings.
I would like to know what is the best estimate of overall record sales for ABBA. I am aware of the 350 million figure but this has been quoted for the last five or so years. Surely it has changed and with the latest revival in Australia and the rest of the world, the latest figure would be reasonably more? One more question is it still true that ‘The Best of ABBA’ and ‘Fernando’ are the biggest selling album and single in Australia. Thanks. David Robertson

Since around 1999, the “official” sales figure quoted is 350 million records. Before that it was around 250 million, sometimes up to 300 million. Apparently Universal Music in Sweden is currently investigating to try and calculate a more accurate figure.

‘Fernando’ was still recorded as the biggest selling single in Australia as late as the 1996 Guinness Book Of Records (the last year that I can recall that they had an Australian supplement at the back of the book). An RCA advertisement published in Billboard magazine in early 1977 proclaimed that ‘Fernando’ had sold 400,000 copies. However, I believe that Elton John’s ‘Candle In The Wind 99’ single has outsold it. That same edition of The Guinness Book of Records stated that ‘The Best Of ABBA’ was still the biggest selling album in Australia, with 1.1 million copies sold, though other figures have said it was as many as 1.25 million. A few years ago, there were press reports that new figures had come to light saying that the ‘Grease’ soundtrack album had sold 2 million copies in Australia, but it turned out that this was double counting –each double album unit had been counted as 2 sales, not 1. Sadly, RCA no longer have their sales information from the 70s, so those sales figures seem to be lost forever.

Years ago, a friend sent me a copy of Elvis Costello's 1982 song, ‘Imperial Bedroom’, and mentioned it was a tribute to Agnetha. The lyrics are rather curious, and there's a chant at the end that sounds like the group's name being repeated. Do you have any background on this song and its possible ABBA/Agnetha connection? Louise

**here's one site with the lyrics: http://www.elvis-costello.com/homepage
/lyrics/ib.html#imperial_bedroom

All I really know about this song is that apparently Elvis recorded it as a tribute to Agnetha (in fact, I’ve never actually heard it). As far as I’m aware, there was no particular connection or contact between Elvis and Agnetha or any other ABBA members at that time. However, on one of his tours during the 80s Elvis had a ‘request wheel’, which would be spun and the band would perform whatever song came up. Included in the song selections was ABBA’s ‘The Name Of The Game’, which was performed at several concerts. I’ve also heard that a live recording was a B-side to one of his singles, but I couldn’t tell you which one. I’ve also read in interviews that he used to perform ‘Knowing Me, Knowing You’ on occasion. Additionally, he has admitted that he “ripped off” ‘Dancing Queen’ in his hit ‘Oliver’s Army’ (notice the rather obvious piano riff!). More recently (this year, in fact) Elvis produced an album for Swedish classical singer Anne Sofie von Otter, which includes a cover of ‘Like An Angel Passing Through My Room’. Benny played piano and co-produced the recording. You can hear a snippet of that recording at http://www.forthestars.net/. In several interviews he has said that he was “quite a fan” of ABBA’s music.

I am wanting to know who published the ‘ABBA to Mama-Mia’ book as we are unable to get it off the shelf in New Zealand and I would like to buy it for my husband for his birthday in July. Thank You, Sharyn Duke

‘From ABBA To Mamma Mia!’ was published by Virgin Books in the UK and in the US by Billboard Books/Watson-Guptil Publications. Penguin Books distributed the Virgin book in Australia. I’m surprised to hear that it wasn’t available in New Zealand – it can still be found on the shelf in some Australian bookshops. ‘From ABBA To Mamma Mia!’ can be ordered from the ABBF Record Service (http://www1.tip.nl/~t097528/) or just about any on-line bookstore on the Internet (amazon.com or amazon.co.uk, Barnes & Noble, etc). Author Carl Magnus Palm’s website (http://www.bahnhof.se/~cmpalm/) has links to a couple of recommended stores. The Penguin website (http://www.penguin.com.au/) has links to many Australian on-line stores, which would be quicker for you to order from than one in America or Europe.

Hi there, I was wondering the price of each book: The Abba Phenomenon, Abba By Abba - Christopher Borg, Abba - Harry Edington, Abba For The Record, Abba The Complete Story- John Tobler, Abba - Nina Rasummesen, Abba The Complete Recording Sessions and of course the price of the National ads. Are these for sale? I live in Melbourne Australia. Please get back Nicoletta

Most of those books were of course published in the 1970s, and have long been out of print. As you’re in Melbourne, I’d recommend going to Chapel Street Bazaar or Just Collectibles in Chapel Street, Prahran – the two shops are almost directly across the street from each other. On past visits I’ve seen quite a bit of original 70s ABBA memorabilia on sale in both, including several books and magazines. Alternately, try on-line auction sites like eBay (www.eBay.com), Yahoo! Auctions (http://auctions.yahoo.com/), the auction section of Amazon.com, and the like. They regularly have many of these books listed, especially latter day ones such as ‘ABBA – The Complete Recording Sessions’, ‘ABBA Gold – The Complete Story’ (which is an updated version of ‘ABBA For The Record’) and the Nina Rasmussen book (which has also been available with an ABBA interview CD). Occasionally the older ones have been seen listed too. As for prices, I’ve seen some of these books go for as low as US$10 or as high as US$100.

The National commercials have never been released. In fact, there were plans to include one on the video ‘Essential Stockholm’ until Björn and Benny vetoed it. They have been on tapes traded (or even sold) between fans. There were originally five different TV commercials made featuring ABBA, and in later ads the ABBA soundtrack was used over non-ABBA footage. You can read more about the National advertising campaign in The ABBA Phenomenon in Australia website (http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Studio/5073/).

My question; In what year was 'Gulligullan' recorded by both Agnetha and Frida. I know it's a radio jingle from Jockemocks Jocke (or something like that) and I have both. Secondly the telephone prank Bosse Parnevik plays on Frida, when was that recorded and more so is it true that this from a show and was later released on an album called 'Telefonlur'? And last; where will I be able to find the demos Frida recorded for ‘Shine’ (My dearest friend etc.), any format will do! Best regards Remko.

“My question”? Try 3, you cheeky thing! Anyway, to answer the first question: I’m really not sure when ‘Gulligullan’ was recorded - I only recently heard of this jingle myself. All that I do know is that both girl’s versions were recorded in the same year, but I don’t know what year that was. My friend ABBAMAILer Filip from Denmark writes with more information: "In your column you ask about 'Gulli-Gullan' with Frida. It was broadcast 25th September 1981 on Sveriges Radio in a program called 'Draget'." Thanks for the update, Filip!

Second question: the Bosse Parnvik album ‘Telefonlur’ was released in 1979. The cover can be seen on the excellent Frida Alone site (http://members.nbci.com/alltid/frida/). I don’t know when the “prank” was actually recorded however.

Third question: the oft-reported unreleased songs and demos from ‘Shine’ are nowhere to be found that I know of – no bootlegs, no audio files on the net, nothing. There are unconfirmed rumours that some fans have copies of these songs but are keeping them close to their chests.
