Could you please tell me why the first "B" in ABBA is written inversely and what the significance of the sign above the group's name (sort of a crown, I guess) is? Thank you. Saly.

There’s no particular significance in the B being reversed. It’s simply a design that makes a nice logo. ABBA’s art director Rune Söderqvist has said about the logo that "the group was two couples, it made sense for the 'B's to face the 'A's". The crown logo you mention was never part of ABBA’s iconography, but was created by PolyGram for the 'ABBA Gold’ compilation in 1992. One explanation I’ve heard about the crown logo was that it was in tribute to the well known three crowns symbol of Sweden.

Can you tell what was the date when ABBA won the European Song Festival in 1974 with their hit 'Waterloo? Thanks. Osmo

It was on Saturday 6 April 1974.

What were ABBA's first 4 Australian hits? Corinne Krogh

'Ring Ring’ was the first single released in Australia in 1973, but it only peaked at number 92 in the top 100. The first real "hit" was 'Waterloo’ in 1974, which reached number 4. The next 4 singles ('Ring Ring’ remix, 'Honey, Honey’, 'So Long’ and 'I’ve Been Waiting For You’) made little impact, the highest position any of those singles reached was 'Honey, Honey’ at number 30, while 'Ring Ring’ finally reached the top 10 at the height of ABBAmania in mid 1976. The next single, 'I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do’ was ABBA’s first Australian number 1 in October 1975, which was immediately followed by 'Mamma Mia’ and then 'SOS’ at the top. So, the first four "hits" would be 'Waterloo', 'I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do', 'Mamma Mia' and 'SOS'.

For more on ABBA’s chart success in Australia and other countries, have a look at Trent Nickson's site ABBA The Worldwide Chart List, and for more about ABBA in Australia in general check out my own site The ABBA Phenomenon in Australia.

Up to now I have not seen the updated 10 years edition of 'ABBA GOLD’. Is there one available, would it be worth buying again??? I was under the impression that this release had been 'retired' in favour of a freshly packaged edition with a new title - 'The Definitive Collection'. If this is so, I feel that a title such as this is very lacking in imagination and an insult to ABBA's superior musical abilities.

I do feel that it is long overdue for some "real"' collectors items to hit the market in the same way that the music industry honours Elvis and The Beatles. The demand is certainly there!

From one crazy fan to another what in your opinion is regarded as sought after memorabilia items, apart from those matchbox dolls which are almost impossible to find now! I am drawn towards trade cards, as they feature very early tacky photos with those dreadful crappy outfits! yours, Julian.

The 'ABBA Gold’ 10th Anniversary Edition was originally scheduled for release (in Europe) on 20 May, but it’s been delayed until 24 June. From what I hear, it’s now in some record shops, but doesn’t seem to have appeared in the larger chain stores such as Virgin or HMV. Whether you buy it or not is up to you - the contents of the disc are identical to the 1999 version, but the booklet has been improved, with updated notes, new photographs and a much better layout, AND it features the real ABBA logo, not the vague approximation that’s been foisted on us by PolyGram for the past decade. I personally prefer the 10th anniversary edition to the previous issues.

'The Definitive Collection’ was never intended to replace 'Gold’, but rather complement it (and replace the plethora of other compilations). 'Gold’ is the single disc of the "big hits" for those with casual interest, while 'Definitive’ is for the listener who wants more, but less than all the albums or the 4 CD box set. 'The Definitive Collection’ is actually my favourite compilation now - it’s what I (and many other fans) have always wanted in an ABBA collection, a chronological collection of all of ABBA's singles, rather than the random collection of 'Gold'.

As for something for "real" collectors, we already have that in disc 4 of the 'Thank You For The Music’ box set. It was hard enough to get Björn and Benny to agree to the release of those songs, and it seems highly unlikely (though not entirely impossible) that anything more will come out.

It's funny you should mention Elvis and The Beatles. Just this week a read an article that mentioned that RCA and the Elvis estate have released over 400 Elvis compilations and boxed sets, occasionally with a previously unreleased track or two - and now there’s the first ever authorised remix of en Elvis song, which I understand was originally a B side, and only 90 seconds long. Big deal! As for The Beatles, the world at large appeared mostly underwhelmed with 'The Anthology’ series of CDs - sales of the second set of CDs were much less than the first, and sales of the third set were less than that! It seemed that many people (not the fans, of course) were expecting songs of the calibre of 'I Want To Hold Your Hand’ or 'Hey Jude’, and instead got what by comparison were inferior quality live versions and weird, half-baked, substandard and unfinished songs. And we had to wait until 25 years after the band split to get that! To top that off, after having 155 "new" tracks released, there were fans who still bitched and complained about supposed titles or alternate versions that hadn’t been released - and then they turned around and complained about which "hits" they already had umpteen times over were left off the compilation '1’.

Finally, it’s hard to say what might be the most "treasured" ABBA collectible. Many fans would say the ABBA dolls, but personally I don’t see the attraction in them. Some would say a record like the Japanese 'Slipping Through My Fingers’ album or the French 'Voulez-Vous’ picture disc LP. For some it may be the 2 ABBA perfumes and ABBA soap. And I think I’m offended at that comment about "those dreadful crappy costumes" - they may not be "stylish", especially by today’s standards, but most of them are better than what some of ABBA’s contemporary artists were wearing. And as designer Owe Sandström says, "you might remember the dreadful costumes, but at least you still remember ABBA".

Back in April of this year, I noted on an ABBA web site somewhere, (I did not bookmark the link), that a DVD of ABBA recordings was due to be released sometime during the European summer 2002. I have just returned from a month’s holiday in Europe and have been trying to but cannot locate this information again. Are you able to confirm or otherwise if there is due to be a ABBA DVD released this year, if so is there a confirmed date for the release. Thanks & Cheers Brian B Andrews

'The Definitive Collection’ DVD is scheduled for release worldwide on 15 July, except in the USA where the release date is 23 (or 30) July, and Australia, where it will be released on 9 September. This DVD will contain all of ABBA’s promo films, including their three Spanish clips and a couple of television clips - you can read all about it here.

Did ABBA, or any of their members perform the song 'Santa Claus Is Coming To Town’? Thanks Steven Frank

No. Before ABBA, all four took part in recording Christmas songs (either solo or in their pre-ABBA bands), and Agnetha also recorded an album of Christmas songs with daughter Linda in 1980. But none recorded this song.

Is it true that the 'One Man, One Woman’ video was made especially for a TV special? I have never heard of any such TV special and I have all of ABBA's TV appearances on video. Is that true? Also, many videos of ABBA songs that were not released as singles exist (Thank You For The Music, Lay All Your Love On Me, El Andar, When I Kissed The Teacher, That's Me, My Love My Life, Tiger, Bang-A-Boomerang, Happy New Year and others). Why were they made? Were these songs at one point deemed to be possible singles? Thank you very much for your help Toby, USA Many years ago, I did hear that there was an idea to make a television special featuring all the songs from 'ABBA – The Album’, which was why 'One Man, One Woman’ and 'Thank You For The Music’ were filmed. But I’ve never heard anything more about what seems to have been just a rumour. Most likely the two clips were made simply to promote the album - as happened with the 'ABBA' LP previously (see next paragraph).

Many of ABBA’s promo films were made not specifically to promote singles. For instance, when the 'ABBA’ album was released in 1975, four films were made (I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, SOS, Mamma Mia and Bang-A-Boomerang) and distributed to TV stations to promote the album and the group, even though only one song had been released as a single at the time (I Do…) and only one other was planned for single release (SOS). 'Mamma Mia’ was only released as a single after popular demand when the clip was shown on the Australian TV show 'Countdown’.

As for the other clips you mention, 'Lay All Your Love On Me’ was put together by Epic Records in the UK (not ABBA/Polar) when that song was released as a limited edition 12 inch single in 1981; 'Al Andar’ was a montage of clips from the 'ABBA In Concert’ TV special put together for a South American special 'Por Siempre ABBA’; 'When I Kissed The Teacher’, 'My Love, My Life’, 'Tiger’ and the alternate clips for 'Knowing Me, Knowing You’ and 'Money, Money, Money’ were made for the special 'ABBA-dabba-doo!!’ (a.k.a. 'ABBA From The Beginning’); 'That’s Me’ was made when the song was released as a single in Japan in 1977; and 'Happy New Year’ was vaguely under consideration for single release at the end of 1980.

My question is why I can't open the "Twistinthedark" page? Is it closed now? Ronald, Berlin

It was temporarily off line due to host server problems, but it’s back now.

I have a question as to ABBA related CD releases. Seeing that the ABBA fever still doesn't show any signs of ceasing why aren't all of Agnetha's Swedish albums and both her and Frida's rare English single A and B sides available on CD? Why doesn't someone also release a compilation of sorts containing all of B&B's compositions given to other artists (like Rikky Rock'n Roller, Funky Feet by Svenne and Lotta, Cecilia and so forth)? Also, I think Universal should re-release the sheet music to all of ABBA's songs since the original books have long been out of print. Why are there so many opportunities that Universal let slip? Thank you very much Toby

Agnetha’s first two Swedish albums have been released by specialty label Royal Records, which also has plans to release her other 3 Swedish albums. Most of both woman’s "rare" English single B-sides were on the compilation 'The Voice Of ABBA’, and in the case of Agnetha, also on 'That’s Me – The Greatest Hits’. There’s only a couple of B-sides, and extended or edited versions of a few A sides, that haven’t appeared on CD. But despite what we fans think, is there really much demand for the girl’s solo recordings? For example, sales of the Sony Music compilation 'My Love My Life’ were a lot lower than expectations – I recall hearing an astronomically low sales figure. Ditto 'The Voice Of ABBA’ collection.

As for a compilation of Björn and Benny compositions, personally I don’t think that there’d be enough interest in such a compilation to warrant the bother that would be required to compile it - sourcing the master tapes, licensing the tracks from various record companies, etc. There have been a couple of compilations of Benny and Björn songs in recent years, but there were either newly recorded versions or live performances.

I don’t know why the sheet music folios for the various albums haven’t been re-released, but again, I’m not sure that there’d be a particularly large market for them. However, there is a new book called ABBA Complete Chord Book. with the music for 71 ABBA songs, which includes all album tracks and some (but not all) B-sides. It's available from Music Sales in the UK.

What do you think of the statement in the new ABBA book 'On Speaking Terms’ where it says that Frida and Benny slept in different rooms during the 79 tour because they were already considering a divorce. To me that's utter crap since Frida always seemed so happy until 81 when Benny left her for that other girl. she really seemed different and couldn't even smile for some time. Thanx for your time. Toby

As we’ve learned from the biography 'Bright Lights, Dark Shadows’, all was not as well within the Andersson/Lyngstad marriage as we’ve been led to believe. Though whether what’s said in 'On Speaking Terms’ is true or not, I can’t say – and I have yet to read that book. Incidentally, "that other girl" was Benny’s current wife Mona.

I've been trying to find out if the ABBA winning song in the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest, 'Waterloo’, was presented in Swedish or English. Do you know where I can find the Swedish version? Thank you!

Lambrini, Greece

When ABBA performed 'Waterloo’ for the Swedish heats, they sang the Swedish version, though for the final in Brighton they sang the English version. The Swedish version can be found on the 2001 reissued version of the 'Waterloo’ CD. Check the track list on the back cover to make sure you’ve got the right one - the Swedish version wasn’t on previous issues of that CD.

Any ABBA DVD on the horizon? Dick Hellman

'The Winner Takes It All – The ABBA Story’ documentary is already available on DVD in the UK, USA, parts of Europe, New Zealand and Australia, and will no doubt be released in other countries as well. 'The Definitive Collection’, featuring all of ABBA’s promo films, will be released in July. Universal plans on releasing 'ABBA – The Movie’ and 'ABBA In Concert’ (the TV special of the 1979 tour) probably in 2003, once the video and soundtracks have been optimised for DVD, and any extras are worked out.

I'm trying to find out what the deal with this is. Elaine Paige and Barbara Dickson were supposed to be doing an album together with some (all?) songs by Benny & Bjorn. I just stopped by the ABBAMAIL website, and the front page has a link to a report that Barbara's singing a song by B&B at her concerts that was to have been from this album. Does this mean the album is or is not happening? Does anyone know? Thanks. Jen

According to fans who were there, when she performed 'The Day The Wall Came Down’ at her recent concerts Barbara announced that it was a new song written for the proposed Elaine and Barbara album that eventually was cancelled. Reportedly, in the liner notes of her new compilation album (which doesn’t include the song) states "An impressed Björn and Benny have recently written a new song, 'The Day The Wall Came Tumbling Down' especially for her" (thanks to ABBAMAILer Michael Price for this last tidbit)

I heard about a new biography about ABBA a few months before, kind of 'The Truth about’ or 'Behind ABBA’ or maybe 'The untold Story of ABBA’. Is there a book like this? And when - how could I get it?

Thanks Wolfgang Kaemmer Stuttgart/Germany

Perhaps you’re thinking of 'Bright Lights, Dark Shadows: The Real Story of ABBA’ by Carl Magnus Palm that was published in September last year? This should be available from any on-line bookstore if you can’t find it in your local shops. The most recent book is 'ABBA On Speaking Terms’ by Frederic Tonnen and Marisa Garau. So far this new book is only available in Dutch, though the English translation is expected in December, and a German translation is also planned.

Could you please tell me if it is possible to get Benny Andersson playing the beautiful tune from 'Kristina från Duvemåla’ called 'I gott bevar’. I have the singing version of it, but as you probably know, Benny played it on the TV show, 'The Winner Takes It All’, a couple of years ago, just him on piano. That's the version I would love to get. Hope you can help. Thanks, Jim Ward

An instrumental recording of 'I gott bevar' is not available, except for that brief snatch played on 'The Winner Takes It All’ documentary.

We are performing 'Dancing Queen’ at school - any hints about ABBA style clothes? Emuncaster

AND

My daughter is dressing up as Agnetha from ABBA for a talent show. Her and her friends are singing 'Waterloo’. Do you know where I could borrow (or buy cheaply) some look alike clothes, particularly the hat. Any ideas would be helpful Sue

AND

Do you know where I could find the ABBA girls dance routines? My friend and I really want to exercise to the proper ABBA dances, we're also looking for the outfits too! Thanks in advance Flustor

I’m sorry, but I don’t know of anywhere where you might find ABBA-like costumes or dance routines. Many fans make their own costumes from photographs, or learn dance routines through repeated watching of TV performances. My best suggestion for a cheap costume would be to find a photograph of the costume you want, and go to a costume hire shop or second hand clothing shop.

Can you tell me if there is a story behind the song 'Cassandra’? I recently purchased some CDs and came across the track which I had not heard before. Regards Steve Perkins

'Cassandra’ was first released as the B-side to 'The Day Before You Came’ in October 1982. The story is based on an ancient Greek myth - here's an explanation that I found on MSN Encarta:

Cassandra, in Greek mythology, daughter of King Priam and Queen Hecuba of Troy. The god Apollo, who loved Cassandra, granted her the gift of prophecy, but when she refused to return his love, Apollo made the gift useless by decreeing that no one would believe her predictions. Cassandra warned the Trojans of many dangers, including the wooden horse by which the Greeks entered the city, but she was dismissed as a madwoman. After the fall of Troy, she was dragged from her sanctuary in the temple of the goddess Athena by Ajax the Lesser and brought to the Greek camp. When the spoils were divided, Cassandra was awarded to King Agamemnon as his slave and mistress. Cassandra warned him that he would be killed if he returned to Greece; again she was not believed. Upon their arrival in Mycenae she and Agamemnon were murdered by Clytemnestra, queen of Mycenae and wife of Agamemnon.

I wanna know if the book 'ABBA - On Speaking Terms’ will be available here in Panama, because many things of ABBA don't come here and I really would like to have that book because I'm an ABBA Fan since many years ago. I wish you to answer me this question please. Rahamffis García, Panama.

So far, the book has only been published in Dutch and is only available in Dutch speaking countries, or from the book's own website. According to the website, the English version is due in December, though whether it will be available in Panama I couldn’t say. I imagine that it will be available from all good on-line bookstores.

Could you please advise where on the Internet I can purchase the soon to be released CD by Helen Sjöholm? Regards, Allan Donne

Helen’s new album 'Visor' was released at the end of May. You’ll find it available from Skivhugget.

I understand that there are a couple of ebooks around on ABBA. One of them is definitely 'Feel The Beat’ by Lucas Ackroyd. No amount of searching is getting me that book. Could u advise me? P.S. Not in stock at Barnes & Noble. Thanks Paddy Nair, ABBA Fan-India

'Feel The Beat’ is the only ABBA ebook that I know of. It was originally published by Dopefest, and was available from that site was well as other online bookstores such as Barnes & Noble and amazon. It appears that it’s no longer available at all - the original publisher’s site is gone.

The 1986 release 'ABBA Live’ (later remastered on CD in 1997) contained 14 tracks. The sleeve listed three sources of the tracks 1) '77 Australian tour 2) '79 Wembley Arena and 3) '81 Dick Cavett show. They weren't specific about which tracks came from which sources. Do you have any information on this? Thanks, Mike Olsen, Salt Lake City, UTAH, USA

Most of the tracks were recorded at Wembley Arena, London in 1979. The exceptions were: 'Fernando’ and 'Money, Money, Money’ were recorded on the Australian tour in 1977, while 'Two For The Price Of One’, Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!’, 'Super Trouper’ and 'On And On And On’ were recorded for the 1981 television special 'Dick Cavett Meets ABBA’. Curiously, the cassette version of 'ABBA Live’ released by Atlantic in North America in 1986 listed the individual recording venues for each song - nowhere else did this appear.

I have a question about ABBA TV appearances. I almost have all of ABBA's (as well as Agnetha and Frida's) TV appearances on video but I haven't been able to find some of the earlier ones like ABBA on 'Eddy Go Round’ Show, some French and US TV appearances from 1975 as well as ABBA on 'Aktuelles Sportstudio’, 'Sylvestergala’ and Peter Frankenfeld Show 1975. Is ABBAMAIL going to be offering them in the future or do you know of anyone who might have them? Toby

Home video recorders weren’t available when these programs were first broadcast, and many probably have not been shown since. I’m not aware of any copies of these programmes circulating through the fan network.

I have been after the sheet music album for 'Super Trouper’ for years. Can't get it as it is out of print. Do you have any ideas to how I might get a copy? Thanks Garry Nieuwkamp Terrigal NSW

As you say, it’s long been out of print. I’d suggest try auction sites like eBay, SOLD.com.au or Yahoo!. I’ve seen various music folios listed there a few times.

Is there a way to download the instrumental version of 'Mamma Mia’? Yours sincerely, Wendela

I don’t know of any specific site where you might find that. I’d suggest try looking on ABBA World (links > sites by category > music files).

Is there any news about Agnetha and her new record? Bruni

AND

I would like to know if there is any news on the (new) Agnetha Fältskog album. Greetings Claudia

Staffan Lindé, Agnetha’s manager/financial advisor/whatever recently announced (yet again) that recording will commence in the northern autumn. He also says that stories that have been circulating (and apparently reported in the book 'ABBA On Speaking Terms’) that she is recording cover versions of well-known songs are incorrect.

My Father is a VERY big fan and had heard that ABBA was doing some shows in the Wisconsin area. He is very interested in seeing them but I have been unable to find any dates in the area while searching. All I saw were the Sweden shows. If you could get me ANY show info (dates/venues) for the Milwaukee, Wisconsin area, I would be very grateful!! Dave Petersen

Unfortunately, ABBA are not performing in Sweden or anywhere else. There is to be an ABBA tribute concert in Sweden in August, which is probably what you’ve found the dates for. The former members of ABBA themselves are not taking part in this concert in any way.

I would love to know if it is possible to find the video of ABBA live in concert! Thanks Gustavo

AND

Do you know where I can get a videotape of the 79 ABBA tour? Valerie B

'ABBA Live In Concert’, a one hour television special of ABBA’s 1979 tour, was released on videocassette in 1993, but seems to be deleted now. Universal has plans to release this special on DVD, perhaps with extras, but that probably won’t appear until sometime in 2003.

I'm a German bass player and I'm looking for any bass tabs for ABBA songs. Can you tell me where I can get some? Until then Robert Bohlayer, Hamburg, Germany

I know of a few sites that have guitar tabs (such as OLGA), but I’ve never come across bass tabs specifically. I’d suggest try looking on ABBA World (links > sites by category > music files).

Has anyone ever thought about making an "ABBA biography" movie? There are many autobiographical movies, especially about The Beatles, there's one about Tina Turner and many other artists as well. - Will there be anything about ABBA in the future? Having ABBA's biography on a movie would be a great thing, so that the fans would know what was really happening during their years of success, their relations, their private ups and downs etc. Thanks, Goran, Vancouver;

I’m not sure that ABBA’s story would make such a great film - compared to the other artists you mention who’ve been the subject of movies, ABBA’s story is relatively boring. The other thing holding back any biographical film is the lack of story - there’s still very little known about ABBA’s private lives, despite the recent plethora of books. 'Bright Lights, Dark Shadows’ goes some way to relieve that, but there are still a lot of gaps in their story.

Hi I'm an ABBA fan here in Bradenton Florida, I want to know where I can find ABBA stuff like posters , t-shirts anything it's so hard to find things here, any kinda places I go to or is it mostly just going to be online stuff. And do you have any idea what kind of things they might be selling at the 'Mamma Mia’ show I'm going to see it in May down here. Thanks Bree

I doubt that you’ll find any stores selling ABBA stuff in your part of the world. Your best bet would be on-line. You’ll find a range of stuff at ABBA specialists like Pop Import, the ABBF Record Service, and right here at ABBAMAIL. There’s quite a few commercial sites that sell various ABBA merchandise - go to ABBA World and check out the links section (go to sites by category > on-line stores and trading points/merchandise).

You’ll mostly find 'Mamma Mia!’ branded merchandise at theatres where the musical is playing. Check out the 'Mamma Mia!’ website for the sort of stuff that’s on sale. The only ABBA merchandise you’re likely to see are the video 'The Winner Takes It All - The ABBA story’ and the book 'From ABBA To Mamma Mia!’.

Since the court case regarding the Dutchman who was stalking her, what has Agnetha been doing? Is she singing or hiding? I wouldn't blame her for leaving the spotlight altogether - it must have been awful for her. How has she handled it? What is she doing now? Genevieve, Australia

Agnetha has been quiet publicly since 1988, releasing no music, performing no public concerts or even doing interviews. The closest she came to breaking her silence was the release of her autobiographical book 'As I Am’ in 1996, but even then, she still did no publicity for the book. Her affair with Gert van der Graaf and the subsequent trail when he started stalking her made no difference to her apparent reclusiveness. However, word is that she is preparing a new album, though no one can say when it might see the light of day - rumours, usually leaking from her own personal management, have circulated every 6 months or so for the past 2 years.

Where can I get information on the play 'Dancing Queen’? I believe it is on Broadway. Tom Stokes

The musical is called 'Mamma Mia’, and indeed it’s playing at the Wintergarden Theater on Broadway, as well as two touring companies in the USA, and productions in Toronto, Canada, Melbourne, Australia, and the original in London is still running after over three years. You can find out more about the musical at www.mamma-mia.com

You said in a previous answer that a reunion was unlikely! Never? Respect for ABBA grows all the time. I am a recent convert. It would be great to see them make music again. Do any of them want to work together again? Who is most against it? Nice web site by the way. Cheers, John Mooney

It seems most unlikely that ABBA would reunite while the four people who used to be ABBA aren’t at all interested in reuniting. Regardless of how popular their music still is or how many CDs are still selling every day, the only member who seems at all really interested in revisiting the ABBA days in Björn, and that’s only because of the never ending publicity circus for 'Mamma Mia!’. I think that all four are pretty much against a reunion - they have moved on to other projects, interests and private lives. The boys have other musical projects, Frida’s retired from public life (again), while Agnetha is either shunning public life or recording a new solo album (depending on which story you hear). The four have gotten together to sing at private parties on the odd occasion over the years, the last known was at their friend and business associate Görel Hanser's 50th birthday party in June 1999.

Do you know if any of the ABBA albums were released in the Swedish language? My brother is keen to get hold of one if so. Many thanks! Andrew Nielsen

ABBA only recorded a few songs in their native tongue. 'Ring Ring’ can be found on the 'Ring Ring’ CD, and 'Waterloo’ and 'Honey, Honey’ can be found on the 'Waterloo’ CD (check the tracklistings, these songs are on the 2001 reissues but weren’t on previous releases of these CDs). These three songs and ABBA’s only other commercially released Swedish song 'Åh vilka tider’ (originally the B-side of 'Ring Ring’) can be found on the compilation 'Agnetha, Björn, Benny, Annifrid på svenska’, which you should be able to get from the ABBF Record Service. That CD also features several solo recordings from the four in Swedish.

I just have a question about the re-re-re-release of’ ABBA Gold’. What is the point of that? I thought that Universal (as opposed to PolyGram) really understood what fans wanted, seeing that they released the Swedish versions of 'Ring Ring’, 'Waterloo’ and 'Honey, Honey’ on CD as well as the 'Ring Ring’ and 'Voulez-Vous’ remixes and 'On And On And On’ (long version) on the forthcoming DVD. They're also working on getting some concert footage and a whole concert released - but re-releasing 'ABBA Gold’ without any bonus material - who's going to buy that? The 1999 re-release was a little bit interesting because the cover had all their autographs on it as well as the complete version of 'The Name Of The Game’ - not the edit like the 1992 version. But this re-release is really ridiculous considering the still "fresh" 'Definitive Collection’. Toby

Of course the current team at Universal Music in Sweden know "what fans want" - they’ve got our favourite author and ABBA "guru" Carl Magnus Palm working as their ABBA consultant! However, they also know what makes commercial sense. Having said that, there are a lot of fans who actually want this re-release of 'ABBA Gold’ - the booklet artwork is improved immensely (in similar style to the 2001 reissues of ABBA’s studio albums), and the real ABBA logo (in News Gothic Bold) is used rather than PolyGram’s approximation, which is something that has pissed a lot of fans off for ten years. The truth is, 'ABBA Gold’ is still selling around the world, mostly thanks to the musical 'Mamma Mia!’, so the new version is primarily for those continuing sales.

The real reason that the extended version of 'On And On And On’ is being released on the forthcoming DVD is because that’s the way the video clip is supposed to be! (and ABBA consultant Carl Magnus Palm insisted that Universal trace the proper recording, rather than do something like the shonky edit on the 'More ABBA Gold’ videocassette) - really, not so much of "what fans want", but "what should be".

.
I wonder about the song 'Lullaby’. Could you tell me the story about that song. It is a song from 'Chess’, but also a song A*teens made. Greetings from Øystein R. Sundelin, Oslo, Norway

They’re not the same song. 'Lullaby’ in 'Chess’ is supposed Hungarian song sung by Florence and her father, which first appeared in the Broadway production in 1988. The A*Teens song is actually called 'Heartbreak Lullaby', and was featured in the Disney film 'The Princess Diaries.

Where can I find the texts of the ABBA songs? Thanks a lot. Romana

Lots of sites have lyrics to ABBA songs. The most popular include Lovelight, ABBA Plaza, and The ABBA Internet Database.

As we all know, ABBA got together in 1982 to do their very last Recording session. Although there have been many TV appearances at the end of this year (2 times 'Late Late Breakfast Show’, German 'Show Express’, Swedish 'Nöjemaskinen’) the band split up. What I wonder is that they always stated not to cease. Even in 1983, Agnetha stated in German TV-Show 'Wetten dass..."this would only be a short break". Was this just a show the four members played? Have there ever been a definitive statement that means "no it's over"? I mean, of course, in 1992 when 'Gold’ was released and I bought my first ABBA-CD it was already clear :-) Mario Politsch Salzburg/Austria

I’m sure that at the time, the four really did intend to get together again once Björn and Benny had finished their 'Chess’ project with Tim Rice. But by early 1985 when that album was released and the boys may have been available, all four probably felt that the time had passed. Indeed, Frida was on the verge of retiring from public life around then following her less-than-successful 'Shine’ album, and in an interview later that same year Agnetha said that she couldn’t see ABBA getting back together again. Personally, I think the usual answer "yes, we will get back together one day" answer was a fob off to stop interviewers asking more questions about the topic.

Did ABBA ever release any CDs in French? Jennings Rountree

ABBA’s only French recording was a version of ‘Waterloo’. It’s hard to come by these days - it was last available on the 29 CD single box set ‘ABBA The Complete Singles Collection’ in 1999, a rather expensive way to get the song. Its only other appearances on CD were a rare 4 track promotional single in 1999 (with all 4 versions of ‘Waterloo’), and the West German compilation CD ‘ABBA International’, which was released in 1988 and no longer available.

Sweden did ban corporal punishment at home in 1979. There were also a lot of other achievements concerning the rights of children back then, like improving the school system. Did one of the ABBAs ever comment this? I have heard Agnetha once met with Astrid Lindgren - who was a children rights activist. Antonia from Germany

I’m not aware of any specific comments by ABBA members on this topic. Coincidentally, an interview between Agnetha and Astrid Lindgren was published in the March issue of the ABBF Fan Club magazine.

I was just wondering what game ABBA were playing during the name of the Game. I saw on the board it said something like Fia Spell. Do you know if it's available for pick up in Canada? Thank you. Sara. Ontario, Canada

It’s called 'Fia med knuff’ of just 'Fia' and it’s a Swedish board game. I doubt that you’d find it in Canada.

What does the word Chiquitita mean? Thanks! Twaycott

I believe a literal translation would be something like "little girl".

Hi- I have been going crazy trying to find the ABBA song which was very popular in the 1980s but may have had a disco d.j. mix to it. My friend loves this song and I am trying to find it for her. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Sincerely Terry

Well, that doesn’t give me a lot to go on. I’m guessing that it may have been 'The Visitors’. A remix of this was popular in gay discos around 1982/83. However, the remix isn’t available commercially - it was prepared by Hot Tracks, who supplied remixes only to discos and DJs.

Do you know anything about FUTURE plans for a 'Mamma Mia’ DVD or VHS? -- T Evans

There are no plans to release anything like this at the moment.

Back in 1976 I saw a TV special in which ABBA performed 'Dancing Queen’ (not one of my personal favourites) before it was released as a single - the clip was not the released clip of the super Swedes in the disco but a studio shot video with psychedelic background AND it was a chorus LONGER than the released single. Nobody has ever dug this up, just like nobody has ever exhumed that excellent promo 'ABBA From The Beginning’ (the special from which the 'More ABBA Gold’ video cribbed 'That's Me’ and 'When I Kissed The Teacher’). Don

That sounds to me like the special 'The Best Of ABBA’, made by the West German programme Musikladen. In Australia, this special was known as 'ABBA In Europe’. It included the first screened performance of 'Dancing Queen’, several weeks before the single was released. However, the song was exactly the same as the released version - I think your memory may be playing tricks on you!

I have some old records with the "B"s around the right way, before they changed to the mirror image "B"s. Are these records worth anything? And if so, where would I look to sell them? Thank you Megan

No more than any other records. ABBA didn’t start using the famous logo with the backwards B until July 1976, so there are literally millions of records out there without it. You could try eBay or the many other auction sites if you’re interested in selling them.

Who decided in ABBA what member would sing every song? Do you know what was the criteria for it? Who was the boss. for instance, I know that Frida and Agnetha wanted to sing 'Fernando’. How it was that finally Frida did it. Thanks. Dennis Poblete Morales from Chile, South America.

I don’t think that there was any particular plan behind it. Often it was just a case of who sounded better when the song was being recorded in the studio, though in later years Benny and Björn would sometimes tailor particular songs to suit one voice - can you imagine anyone but Agnetha singing 'The Winner Takes It All’? In the case of 'Fernando’, it was originally written for Frida as a solo song for her album 'Frida ensam’ in 1975, and ABBA recorded their version afterwards, so that’s how she came to be lead vocalist on that song. One criteria that ABBA did have was that both women would have an equal number of solo lead vocals, which happened on every album except 'ABBA’ (Agnetha 2, Frida 1) and 'Super Trouper’ (Frida 4, Agnetha 3).

Björn and Benny have sold their rights on ABBA-Songs. What does each member earning (%) by 'ABBA Gold’ or other new albums? Hilde

Only Björn and Frida have sold their mechanical royalties - these are the royalties they receive for sales of ABBA recordings. Björn and Benny still own their songwriting copyrights. I’m really not sure what percentage each member might be receiving.
