| In the book, ‘The Complete Recording Sessions,’ I recall Benny mentioning an unfortunate circumstance where one of their ABBA songs sounded too similar to another popular song that he didn't name. I've always thought that the disco-sounding riffs in ‘As Good As New’ sounded very much like the Bee-Gee's song ‘Staying Alive.’ Is this speculation shared by others? Thanks, Kev | | Actually, I always thought that the prominent instrumental riff in ‘Voulez-Vous’ sounded very much like the one in ‘Staying Alive’ – but perhaps that’s because it was some of the same musicians playing on both songs. But the song that Benny’s talking about in this particular anecdote is actually ‘Knowing Me, Knowing You’. On page 58 of ‘The Complete Recording Sessions’, he says "The only problem was that when it was released, someone wrote to us and pointed out that a small part of the song was identical with a part in another famous composition (an early 1970s US hit which shall remain unnamed). That was a total coincidence, though." I have no idea what that song might be however. |

| I remember a news report in the summer of 1981 (around July) in one of Germany's big tabloids (Bild am Sonntag) saying that ABBA would be performing a concert in Las Vegas in the fall of that year, doing a concert with material from their newest album, which we now know would have been ‘The Visitors’. At that time, I had just been aware of ABBA and their great music for maybe a year (I was 10 then - so I'm excused I hope :-) ), and I was eagerly anticipating reports on that concert and the forthcoming album - but nothing would materialize in the next months, which was quite a bummer ... Well, my question to you is if you know of any planned ABBA performance in Las Vegas in the fall of 1981 (and the reasons why that never came to be) - or was it just all a great big hoax? Funny enough, I remember running over to my friends' place at that time immediately after reading that article, telling them there'd be an ABBA concert upcoming. Whenever we meet these days (which is not often), they keep poking fun at me saying I was all nuts at that time over that ABBA concert and the "Vegas" album and all that ... Next time I see them I'd like to tell them the "real" story behind that report (if there is one). I am aware today my source material at that time was not very reliable ... This is about as long-winded I could put my question. Sorry about that. Greetings from Freiburg in Germany, Andreas. | | I’ve never heard any story of proposed 1981 concert (especially in Las Vegas). However, in April 1981 ABBA made the television special ‘Dick Cavett Meets ABBA’, which included ABBA performing several of their hits and a couple of new songs from the forthcoming album (‘The Visitors’) live in the TV studio. Though it is well known that this special was filmed in a TV studio in Stockholm, many people still think that it was made in America, because Dick Cavett was an American talk show host, and many assume that the ABBA show was just one show in his regular series, which it wasn’t. Perhaps the article you remember was talking about this "concert" but got the facts a little twisted. |

| I read in a newspaper, January 15, 2002, that they found the song ‘When The Waves Roll Out To Sea’, which has been lost during recording sessions of 1980. It is also written that the song should be included in the musical ‘Chess’ but they didn't, because it was lost. However, due to the fact that the song was re-found, it will be supposed to release it in Britain with lyrics. Can you tell me if what I read is true or it is pure fiction? In the bootlegged instrumental version, it really sounds like ‘Just Like That’. Is it true? Thank you very much! Pierre Dionne, Montreal AND On the English internet-site ‘Dotmusic’, I read about a special radio-programme on BBC dedicated to the ABBA. In this programme, for the first time, the listeners have hear ‘When The Waves Roll Out To Sea’, unpublished song of the 1982. My question is: this song will distributed on CD-single to the music-shops? Mauro, Italy AND Recently your news section reported that the composition ‘When The Waves Roll Out To Sea’ was played at the end of a BBC radio special. To the best of your knowledge are you able to clarify what format the track was in. For example: 1/ Was it an instrumental only? (and was it complete) 2/ Did any of the ABBA members sing on the track? 3/ Is it the version of ‘Just Like That’, that we would have been released had recording sessions continued? 4/ Or was it a demo from the ‘Chess’ era and we shouldn't get too hung up on it? Any way you get the drift of what I mean, a lot has been said about it being played but no one has outlined what it actually was and if you can help with the confusion I'd appreciate it. Thanks G. Yewers Melbourne | | Oh dear, the way the media twists things around for a "good story"! Yes, an instrumental demo of ‘When The Waves Roll Out To Sea’ was played on the BBC Radio 2 special ‘Thank You For The Music’ on 22 January this year. This recording was apparently made when Benny and Björn were starting work on ‘Chess’, and like many other demo recordings circulating, is simply Benny playing the song on piano and synthesiser, with no vocals or other instruments. Though many sources date it in 1982, it’s my belief that it was probably done in early 1983. Despite what the BBC’s publicity department says, it was not a "lost ABBA recording from their unfinished final album" and is not being released as "a new ABBA single". The tune of the verses of ‘Waves’ is identical to ABBA’s unreleased verse of ‘Just Like That’, but with a completely different chorus melody. The recording of ‘Waves’ played on the BBC is on a few bootleg CDs, such as ‘Giving A Little Bit More’. Reportedly, this tune is finally going to see the light of day in the new Swedish production of ‘Chess’, sung by the character of Anatoly Molokov, which is why it was played on the BBC special. You can read more about the long and winding road of ‘Just Like That’ at http://members.home.net/abbamouse/id1.html. Phew! I hope I covered everything asked here. ;-) |

| I'm a great admirer of ABBA and one of the songs I like best is ‘The Visitors’. Both the music and lyrics of this song are extraordinary (especially the intro). I wonder if you could tell me what the deep meaning of this song is (what the real message of the song is, deep interpretation of the lyrics, sources of inspiration for the song etc). Regards, Lucy. | | According to Björn, the lyrics are about the situation faced by dissidents in countries such as the USSR at the time. As he says in ‘The Complete Recording Sessions’, "I was trying to imagine what it must feel like to sit and wait for that ominous knock on the door, never knowing when if would come, and never being able to be sure of anything." (page 113). ‘The Visitors’ is one of my favourite songs too! |

| In one of your posted answers you said: "Like I said, I don’t recall Björn himself actually saying "1 billion dollars", but perhaps he has." This was regarding the offer made to ABBA to regroup for 100 (?) concerts. On the VH1 show ‘FanClub’ which was recently broadcast, there was a part of an interview shown of Björn where he does in fact talk about that one billion dollar offer and why they turned it down. So, he has actually confirmed that the offer was made and on the tape he's grinning about the whole thing! ;-) Regards, Felicia | | Yes, but Björn also says that ABBA toured Australia in 1979 - he's hardly the most reliable source of information. Just because the 1 billion dollar figure has been repeated ad nauseum, doesn’t necessarily make it true. As I said in my original response to this question, the first reports about this story said "1 billion Swedish kronor". Once the report hit the international news wire services, it had morphed to "1 billion US dollars" (a vastly different amount). And now that it’s become folklore, does anyone think that Björn (or anyone else) is going to contradict the story? Now can we please let this story rest? |

| Do you know where you could possibly buy any 70s style ABBA T-shirts, they don't seem to sell any here in England and believe me I've looked. If you could possibly help me out that would be great Thanks. Paul. AND I want to know where I can find ABBA stuff like posters, T-shirts, anything. It's so hard to find things here, any kind of places I go to or is it mostly just going to be online stuff. And do you have any idea what kind of things they might be selling at the ‘Mamma Mia!’ show I'm going to see it in May down here. Thanks Bree Bradenton Florida AND I am looking for an ABBA hat and T-shirt and I'm having no luck can you help me? I'm a real big fan. Thank you very much, Sharrell | | There’s not much in the way of ABBA merchandising in the marketplace these days - as it is for most groups that broke up 20 years ago. When ’ABBA GOLD’ was released in 1992, there were a range of ABBA T-shirts available, but that was almost 10 years ago now. ABBAMAIL has an ‘ABBAMAIL’ T-Shirt for sale, as well as an original T-shirt transfer from 1976 and some other merchandise – check out the Merchandising page. The ABBF Record Service and Pop Import also have limited ABBA merchandise like that available. Or you could try auction sites like eBay – they sometimes have original 70s and newer ABBA merchandise like T-shirts, badges and posters listed. At theatres where ‘Mamma Mia!’ is playing, you’ll find a range of merchandise related to the show, with the only ABBA merchandise likely to the video ‘The Winner Takes It All – The ABBA Story’ and the book ‘From ABBA To Mamma Mia!’. |

| I was wondering if you know how many copies of the 1st issue of ‘Dancing Queen’/’That’s Me’ were released in Australia (forwards B), I have heard there were only 3 released in Australia, however after reading your history of ABBA's discography I would like to know how many were printed. Also how much is it worth. John | | Tens of thousands of these covers were printed. On a 1994 ABBA television special, it was said that there were only 3 printed as a mistake (and they were worth over $400), but this is most definitely not true. I remember when the single was released in August 1976, my local record shop (in Canberra) had a whole rack of them – but I stupidly didn’t buy any copies then! One of the Sydney newspapers (The Daily Mirror, I think) was also giving away copies of the single in a competition, and in every edition of the paper they reproduced the "forwards B" cover. In recent years, I’ve managed to pick up no less than six copies at the Parramatta Record Fair in Sydney – and the most I paid was about $4. The story that I've heard was that a local insurance company already had a logo featuring two Bs facing each other, so there was some dispute over ABBA’s use of the similar idea, though obviously it was quickly resolved – on the day of ‘Dancing Queen’s release, there were plenty of covers in the shops with the now familiar ABBA logo with the "backwards B". You can see the front cover of the "forwards B" version here. There are two versions of the single cover with the proper ABBA logo - one has the ® and one doesn't. The one without the ® was printed last - as a result of the dispute about who owned the backward Bs copyright issue I mentioned above. |

| It seems that the remaster-group have lost one second from ‘Knowing Me, Knowing You’. In time 1.48 there is one second skip (some drums have gone away) in second verse. At first I thought that the CD is broken (this appears first time in new remastered ‘Gold’ and then in Tin Box singles collection) but no. Odd thing is that in 1997 remastered ‘Arrival’ has "full" version. 1999 and after that all releases have this skip-version. Is it mistake - again or is it really so that Mr Andersson/Ulvaeus have decided that: "lets take one second away - its much more dynamic that way". Jari/Finland | | I’m sorry, but I don’t hear anything different here. Perhaps it’s just a digital glitch – several people have mentioned that most ABBA CDs seem to be filled with them, though they’re hardly noticeable to the average person. Perhaps one of the audiophiles out there can shed some light on this apparent mystery? |

| After reading ‘Bright Lights, Dark Shadows’ it is obvious that ABBA owed a great deal to Stig for their successes especially in the early days. Do you know what their relationship was like with Stig when he died? Given all the legal battles they had fought, I am guessing it wasn't as close as it once was. Regards Terry | | No, sadly the relationship between Stig and the ABBA members was never the same after the legal difficulties between them in the 80s. But why ask me? It’s all in the book! And if anyone reading this hasn't read this excellent book yet, for shame! |

| How hard is it to come by a copy of Agnetha's first single ‘Jag var så kär’ = ‘I Was So In Love’? Is it possible at all to hear at least / if not get a copy of the unrecorded stage song ‘I Am Still Alive’? Do you think Frida sings the 1st verse in ‘The Way Old Friends Do’, with Agnetha the 2nd? And is there a full recording of the beautiful harmony song of ‘Hamlet III Part 1 &2? Thanks soo very much David Jackson. | | 1. It’s surprisingly easy to find most pre-ABBA singles at second hand shops in Stockholm. However, judging by your e-mail address, you’re from Australia so that doesn’t do you much good unless you’re planning a trip to Sweden, and unfortunately I don’t know of any of those shops having a website. The song is on the compilation CD ‘My Love My Life’ which is available from the ABBF Record Service or many on-line CD stores such as Skivhugget. 2. ‘I’m Still Alive’ was never recorded in the studio by ABBA (or Agnetha solo), though tapes of concerts recorded by audience members have been floating around for many years. It can be found on several unofficial CDs including ‘Live! At Last’, available from ABBAMAIL – check out the Merchandise page. 3. Frida sings the first lines of ‘The Way Old Friends Do’ ("You and I can share the silence/finding comfort together/the way old friends do"), Agnetha sings the next set of lines ("And after fights and words of violence/we make up with each other/the way old friends do"), both girls sing the rest of the first refrain together, then all four sing the second refrain together. 4. There is no full version of ‘Hamlet’ available officially or unofficially. An extended version appeared on the bootleg ‘Giving A Little Bit More’, but this was simply the extract from ‘Abba Undeleted" extended by repeating some parts of the song - rather cleverly, I must add. |

| Please can you tell me if I can obtain the inlay for ‘Waterloo’ and ‘Arrival’ to put in the back of plastic CD cases? These were the first 2 ABBA albums I bought when they were reissued last year, but I hate the cardboard CD holders and to rub salt in the wound I had an accident with one. To my further frustration I then found a few independent CD shops had these reissues in proper plastic cases. Ian Walters (messenger) | | Possibly you might be able to get replacement inlay cards from your local Universal Music office, but I seriously doubt it. Unfortunately, I think you’ll either have to buy replacement CDs or do without those inlays. |

| I have been a great fan of ABBA for over 15 years. I would like to know where the ABBA members are and what they are doing. Is there any possibility of their re-union? With thanks Ravi Anthony | | Björn and Benny are working on many different musical projects together and separately: the "ABBA musical" ‘Mamma Mia!’, a Swedish production of their 1984 musical ‘Chess’ which opened in February in Stockholm, and the English translation of their 1995 musical ‘Kristina från Duvemåla’. Benny is touring intermittently with his new ‘Orkestra’ and has recently released a new album of mostly instrumental music. Frida has retired from public life in Sweden (again), while Agnetha has been living out of the public eye since 1988, though rumours continue to circulate that she’s planning a new album for release this year. It’s extremely unlikely that there will ever be an ABBA reunion, publicly anyway. In 1999 the four sang together at Görel Hanser’s 50th birthday party, but that was a private occasion. |

| Having just bought ourselves a DVD player, I find it disturbing that there appear to be no ABBA DVDs yet available in Australia. The only information we can find so far would suggest that for whatever reason the brainiacs in charge of marketing have forgotten what a huge market for ABBA Australia was (and still is!), and have released very little on DVD so far and have certainly released nothing here. Apparently ‘Gold’ and ‘More Gold’ were at one stage available in the UK but even those titles have been deleted!! Do you have any info to suggest otherwise?? Thanxalot Martina Tait AND We are trying to source some ABBA promotional videos which were released shortly after they stopped touring. This was their way of keeping in touch with the community of fans. Any ideas if any company is still releasing remastered versions on DVD or VCD media? Regards James | | There are very few ABBA DVDs released anywhere so far, due to contractual machinations. The only official ABBA DVD release is the 1999 documentary ‘The Winner Takes It All – The ABBA Story’, and so far that’s only available in the UK (region 2) and the USA (region 1), and I expect it will be released in all other regions soon. ‘The Definitive Collection’, gathering together all of ABBA’s promo clips (plus a couple of bonuses) will be released within the next couple of months, hopefully in all regions. Check out ABBAMAIL's Latest News page for the track listing. ‘ABBA GOLD’ and ‘MORE ABBA GOLD’ have been "unofficially officially" released in a couple of territories (Japan and Brazil, possibly others), though the contents have not been digitally remastered for DVD and are from the same masters as the previous video cassette releases. According to Universal Music in Sweden, the Brazil releases are illegal. There is also a DVD from Taiwan titled ‘ABBA A Video Biography – Music Video Karaoke’ which has truly appalling quality video and sound. There are plans to release ‘ABBA – The Movie’ at some stage (probably not until 2003), all digitally remastered and improved for the DVD format. |

| I have seen both the B&B concert in Globen (with Benny appearing) and the ‘Kristina’ musical live. Do you know if they are/will be released on video/DVD? Regards Sylvia | | No, neither of these events has been released on DVD or videocassette, and I doubt that either would be. There was a CD release from the B&B concerts in 1999 (‘Från Waterloo till Duvemåla’), and a few years ago there was a television special of ‘Kristina’ shown in Sweden. |

| I just write you to ask you about a song: ‘I Am The City’. Do you know what CD can this song belong? I'm trying to find it in all ABBA's records and CDs, but I can't find it on ‘Arrival’, ‘’The Album’, ‘Gold’, ‘Voulez-Vous’, ‘Super Trouper’, ‘Waterloo’, ‘Ring Ring’, ‘The Visitors’ or ‘Live’. Thanks a lot!! Jose Rodríguez-Vigil Reguera | | The only CD that you’ll find ‘I Am The City’ on is ‘MORE ABBA GOLD’ (or ’25 jaar na Waterloo deel 2’ in The Netherlands). It was recorded in 1982, during some of ABBA’s last recording sessions, but wasn’t released at all until ‘MORE ABBA GOLD’ in 1993. |

| What is Agnetha's sister Mona's actual birth date, I know she was born in 1955 but what date? Thanks. Linda | | I’m sorry, but I don’t know her birth date. |

| Do you know, when the Swedish recording of ‘Chess’ is due to? Thanks in advance for you answer. Régis. (from France) PS: will they reissue the video with Elaine Paige, Murray Head... | | It has been reported that a Swedish cast recording will be made, and October has been mooted as the release date. I haven’t heard of any plans to re-release the 1985 video compilation ‘Chess Moves’, and I don’t imagine that they would be re-releasing it. |

| I was just wondering where on the Internet I could here Bjorn, Benny, Agnetha, and/or Anni-Frid talking. Thanks. Sara | | Not that I know of. Perhaps a reader can help. Anyone? |
| | | |
| Just wondering, do you know who the Fernando is that they're referring to in the song? Any info would be a big help. Thank you. Vin AND This has been a favourite song of mine for years, before I even really knew anything about ABBA. Does anyone know the story behind the song? Patti Brown | | The title ‘Fernando’ originates from ABBA’s manager Stig Anderson, who wrote the original Swedish lyrics, which are basically a love song to a character named ‘Fernando’. For the English version, Björn reworked the lyric, keeping the title, but making the song the story of two "old warriors" recounting being involved in an unnamed war (obviously in the southern US and/or Mexico) many years ago. I don’t think the name is based on anyone in particular, rather just a catchy, memorable name with the right number of syllables. |

| Is it true that Michael Tretow had a second stroke and Agnetha’s new album is long delayed because of the illness? Ute | | It’s hard to know what’s going on – there’s been no official confirmation that Michael Tretow has had even one stroke, let alone a second one. In fact, the "news" of a second stroke came just a day or two after ABBAMAIL’s Latest News page reported (from an anonymous source apparently "in the know") unofficial confirmation that he’d had the first stroke, so perhaps the "second stroke" story grew out of this report. The only official word is that Agnetha’s album project has been delayed "because of illness of one of the team". Michael was seen at the recent Stockholm premiere of ‘Chess’ and was reported to be looking "fine". |

| Please could you tell me where you can purchase ABBA concert or TV appearances on video apart from ‘ABBA - The Movie’ and ‘ABBA In Concert’. I particularly want: ‘I Am An A’, ‘I'm Still Alive’, ‘The Way Old Friends Do’ and ‘Dick Cavett show' etc. Gini | | You won’t find any of those songs/TV shows available on officially released pre-recorded videos, and unfortunately you won’t find any video performance of ‘I Am An A’ or ‘I’m Still Alive’ - neither song has been released in any format. ‘The Way Old Friends Do’ was tagged onto the end of the ‘ABBA In Concert’ TV special when it was shown in the USA and Japan in the early 1980s, but it didn’t appear on the 1993 PolyGram video of that special. |

| After reading the book ‘Bright Lights, Dark Shadows’, I learnt that ABBA did receive numerous comments (both positive and negative) from famous pop and rock stars. Yet, it seems very curious to me that seemingly no comment has ever been heard on ABBA from John Lennon and Paul McCartney. This sounds a bit weird. I've read on a website that includes comments on ABBA from various famous celebrities and there, John Lennon is quoted as saying that his favourite ABBA song is ‘Knowing Me, Knowing You’. That's all. But I am not 100% certain about the reliability of that website. Given the fact that ABBA was termed the Beatles of the 70s and their success in Britain was and still is enormous, it might have prompted some comments on ABBA from Lennon and McCartney (positive and even negative). Have you got any information about this matter? Regards, Dang Quoc Chi, Hanoi, Vietnam | | As a long time Beatles fan, I’ve personally never read of heard of either Paul of John commenting on ABBA. There was a story circulating some years ago that apparently John commenting favourably about ABBA, though I’ve never seen the proof of that. During ABBA’s peak years, John was in his reclusive "househusband" phase, so any comments (if indeed there were any) would likely have been in one if his many dozens of interviews conducted in the last few months of 1980. Incidentally, Paul met Frida during the recording of her ‘something’s Going On’ album in 1982, when she was in London for string overdubbing recording sessions. There is a bit of footage of them meeting in the TV special ‘Something Going On – The Making Of A Record Album’. |
| | | |
| I'm still not having luck find the Frida CD ‘Something's Going On’, can you please email me as to which web site I can get hooked up with. Thank you, Sophia | | It should be available from most on-line stores (I just checked, it’s available from Amazon.com for example). Presumably any US-based service will be selling the remastered version released there a couple of years ago, rather than the original released in 1983 (and reissued a couple of times since). The ABBF Record Service also has it available, but I’m not sure if that’s the remastered version or the original. Skivhugget in Sweden appears to have the US remastered version for sale. |

| I recently got ‘The Hep Stars Collection’, ‘Frida Collection’, and I've had Agnetha vols. 1 & 2 for a while. What's the best Hootenanny Singers CD to buy? Also, does Benny sing lead vocals on any of the Hep Star songs? I got a kick out of hearing ‘Four Strong Winds’ (Neil Young), ‘Last Night I Had The Strangest Dream’ and ‘Little Green Apples' (Glen Campbell) in Swedish. Also what instruments are played in ‘Hasta Mañana’? I thought I heard a mandolin? Thank you, Bill Paganucci NJ, USA | | There are a couple of Hootenanny Singers compilations of singles and album tracks available – ‘Bästa’ and ‘Svenska Favoriter’. Try the ABBF Record Service or a Swedish store such as Skivhugget. Beyond that, I’m not sure what else to recommend – I’m not too familiar with the Hootenanny Singers’ recordings (shameful, I know :-) ). I’m not aware of Benny singing lead on any Hep Stars songs. To the best of my knowledge, Svenne Hedlund sang all lead vocals, until his wife Lotta joined the band towards the end of the 60s. The only credited instruments on ‘Hasta Mañana’ are keyboards (played by Benny, of course), guitar (Björn and Janne Schaffer), bass (Rutger Gunnarsson), drums (Ola Brunkert) and percussion (Malando Gassama) (page 36, ‘The Complete Recording Sessions’). There are no additional instruments credited on the LP sleeve. |

| Just visited your website and there was a question someone asked about ABBA on DVD, what I read made me so happy knowing ‘ABBA - The Movie’ is coming to DVD. Just emailing you to see if you got any more info on what is being converted to DVD and a website or email address I can write to get more info too. I would be most grateful for any info. Thanks Sborg (ABBA fan for ever) | | There’s no further news on ‘The Movie’ DVD at this stage, and I don’t have anyone you could contact. My best advice is to keep checking ABBAMAIL’s Latest News page - this will be the first place any news appears. |
| | | |
| Any idea where I can see the complete ‘ABBA Greatest Hits’ sleeve or cover online? It would be great if you can send me a link where to get it. Marco | | I’m guessing that you want to see the freaky cartoon drawing that appeared on the Polar LP, not the park bench photo that appeared in the UK and USA. You can see the full picture on Trent Nickson’s fabby ABBA - The Worldwide Chart List site. Just scroll down to the bottom of the main page. |
| | | |
| Could you please tell me if Anni-Frid has an official Internet homepage please? Thanking you Paul Nethercott, Brisbane, Australia. | | Frida does not have an official website. There are quite a few unofficial ones, such as Twist In The Dark. Check the links section of ABBA World (go to links > sites by category > ABBA solo) for more. |

| I was wondering if you knew where to purchase these CDs. They are 6 CDs on a box set called ‘ABBA REUNION’ CDs. I have seen them on the Internet but found no website where I could purchase them. They include a lot of remixes of ABBA songs and I would love to have them. Thank you. | | I have only ever seen this box set listed on eBay. I don’t know of anywhere else where it can be purchased. Though this collection purports to be filled with "rare remixes", all of them are unofficial, and most of them would appear to be amateur - that is, probably home-made by fans. |

| 1 Why won’t Polydor put out a greatest hits CD of Frida like they did with Agnetha? By putting her solo hits both English and Swedish song and add some ABBA songs on it i.e. ‘Super Trouper’/’Me And I’/’When All Is Said And Done’ etc surely I’m not the only Frida fan out there that agrees with me? 2 I think ABBA should get the award at this year’s Brit Awards 2002 for outstanding contribution to British music, don’t you agree I’m sure all ABBA FANS must agree with me? Thanks for listening Thomas Blackpool Lans UK | | 1. I’ve heard that it is Frida herself who has vetoed any international release of a compilation of her solo songs. A budget compilation ‘Svenska Popfavoriter - Frida’ was released in Sweden a couple of years ago, which included songs from her 3 Polar albums, ‘Frida Ensam’, ‘Something’s Going On’ and ‘Shine’ - though there were no single edits, "special versions" of songs or rarities included. Any international compilation would only include songs in English, which leaves only the songs on the two 80s albums and a few stray singles. 2. Apparently, the powers that be behind the Brit Awards are unwilling to present awards such as "Lifetime Achievement" or "Outstanding Contribution" to acts who aren’t going to be present to receive their award, and seeing as both Agnetha and Frida are currently shunning public life, and Benny is seemingly "over" the whole ABBA thing, there’s only Björn who’d likely be likely to appear, as he did when he presented an award in 1999, when there were many rumours that both he and Benny would be there, or would perform, or the girls would join them. |

| I am hoping you may be able to help me find out how to authenticate ABBA signatures? I was sent two ABBA photos in the 70's by a Danish relative and they are both apparently personally signed by all group members. Thanks, Sharon. Perth, Western Australia | | It’s not always the easiest to tell, as over the years their autographs have changed slightly, depending on what they were signing and how rushed they were. But in the 70s their autographs were fairly consistent - here you can see examples of Agnetha's, Björn's, Benny's and Frida's autographs as they were reproduced in several books, posters and music folios in the 70s. |

| My question is if you know something about the new ‘ABBA Platinum’ DVD. Thanks a lot. Enrique F Manfredi Buenos Aires Argentina | | Though this DVD title has recently appeared on several on-line stores (with a release date of 8 April 2002), this would appear to be jumping the gun a bit. ‘The Definitive Collection’ is the title of the real ABBA DVD compilation of their promo clips, and it will probably be released in May or June this year. For more information, see ABBAMAIL's Latest News page. |

I just want to know if Agnetha recorded her song ‘När du tar mej i din famn’ 1979 at Polar Studios and if any ABBA member or one of "their" musicians did the backing track or backing vocals. Kind regards, Gerrit Germany | | I’ve never seen any information on where Agnetha recorded this song, so I can’t say for sure whether it was recorded at Polar Studios, or whether any of ABBA’s usual crew of musicians played on the track. However, none of the other ABBA members were featured – at the time it was recorded (29 January 1979) Björn and Benny were in the Bahamas on a "song writing holiday", while Frida was preparing to travel to Spain to film a small role in the film ‘Gå på vattnet om du kan’ (Walk On Water If You Can) (page 187, 'ABBA - The Book'). |

| Do you know if the tickets for the ABBA Australian tour in 1977 had the groups autographs printed on the back? Regards Karen | | Yes, all the tickets for ABBA’s Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide concerts had the four member’s autographs printed on the back, as a security measure against counterfeiters. This means around 100,000 were printed with autographs on the back! The tickets for the Perth concerts did not - they looked more like any other standard concert ticket of the day. |

| My question is to, hopefully, clear up some conflicting things I've read about the members of ABBA - which members of ABBA did (and still do) smoke? Thanks, Michael | | All four of them used to smoke, and last that I knew for sure, Benny was the only one that still did. Many years ago, Agnetha was caught smoking after appearing in a 'Non-Smoking Generation' T-Shirt for an anti-smoking campaign run by the Swedish Government. One of my spies tells me that Björn was seen smoking at the recent 'Chess' after-premiere party in Stockholm. And I'd been led to believe that he quit years ago! (thanks to Paul C for the update). |

| On what websites can I find the lyrics of all the songs on the solo album ‘Wrap Your Arms Around Me’ by Agnetha? Thank you very much. Dang Quoc Chi, Hanoi, Vietnam | | Check out Agnetha’s Official Fan Club Site. You’ll find the lyrics to all her solo recordings there. |

| What is the name of the game that the members of ABBA were playing on the musical video ‘The Name Of The Game’? Diego T.L. | | That game is called ‘Fia med knuff’ or just ‘Fia’, and I believe it’s a popular Swedish board game similar to Ludo. |

I could see today at the CDNOW site a new ABBA Live CD, they’re announcing the release day for January 8th. Do you know anything about it? Enrique Fernando Manfredi from Argentina
AND CD Universe link Thought you’d like to know about it. T. Evans | | Like the above-mentioned ‘ABBA Platinum’ DVD, this would appear to be jumping the gun. I note now that this "CD" has disappeared from CDNow. Both these sites have no information at all, except for the title and "release date". Though it has been mentioned that a new live CD may be released, possibly to coincide with the release of ‘ABBA - The Movie’ on DVD (itself, currently on hold), nothing is under development at this stage. |

| Could you tell me what happened to the fanzine ‘ABBA Express’? It’s been along time since I heard of it but its always puzzled me why it stopped. Many thanks Ant | | In 1995, the original editor passed the fanzine on to another fan. Apparently, the fanzine ran for only three more issues (#34 in June 1996 was the last one), and according to several people who were subscribers, no explanation was ever given. |

| Are there any companies or sites that sell or custom make ABBA outfits, especially the Tunics with the cat portrait on them? Thanks for your help TR4Ever1 | | Unfortunately, no. Many fans have made their own costumes, creating them from photographs. |

| What was the relationship between the single members of ABBA and the drugs? I read they used or had used during their "single" career in the 60s cannabis and LSD: is it true? What did they tell about that? Why does Magnus Palm talk about "drama" referring to Agnetha's second pregnancy? Why was it a drama? Why did Agnetha and Bjorn divorce? Is it true that Bjorn beat Agnetha up? Thank you very much for your answers. I hope to read them soon. Lilli | | 1. The only "reference" to drugs by any ABBA member that I’ve ever seen was an interview by Björn in MOJO magazine in 1999, when he mentioned "trying" cannabis once, then he heard stories of drug addiction and never tried drugs again. I seriously doubt that any of them have imbibed (more than casually) in anything stronger than alcohol and cigarettes. Frida is presently a trustee of the Mentor Foundation, which to quote from their website: "was incorporated in 1994 by a group of prominent international personalities to address the issue of substance abuse, by striving towards reducing the demand for drugs among the world's young people. The Foundation is independent, apolitical, and funded through voluntary contributions." 2. Agnetha’s second pregnancy was indeed "dramatic". Around the middle of her pregnancy, it was feared that she would lose the baby and so was confined to bed to rest for a while. To accommodate ABBA’s recording schedule, she would come into the studio for a few hours and record her vocals while reclining in a deck chair. 3. Björn and Agnetha divorced simply because they grew apart - just like so many other couples. No, Björn did not beat Agnetha. |

| I’d like to know the words of all ABBA’s songs. Can you send me a website address/addresses where they can be found? Thanks in advance. With best wishes, yours sincerely Vasiljko Bosnia & Herzegovina (Republic of Srpska). | | There’s many sites with lyrics – the most popular include Lovelight and ABBA Plaza. |

| I am looking for ‘ABBA - The Movie’. Any idea where I can get it and how much? Larry Allen Belleville, Ontario Canada AND I'd like to know how can I buy ‘ABBA - The Movie’. Thanks for your help. Rachel | | You’ll find second hand copies of ‘The Movie’ regularly appearing on eBay, but it’s only been officially released in PAL. Any NTSC copies listed are either dubbed from the PAL or taped from television. At the moment new official copies can’t be bought anywhere. Plans are to re-released it on DVD, but probably not until next year. |

| My father used to really like ABBA, and can't remember the name of his favourite ABBA song. He thinks it has lyrics in it like "ra ra russian king, lover of the russian queen" or something similar. Could u tell me what song this is? Farshad :-) | | Yes, that song is ‘Rasputin’, a big hit for German group Boney M in 1978. ABBA never sang that song, though Boney M were g also in Switzerland at the same time as ABBA were there making their TV special 'ABBA In Switzerland' in 1979. |

| Hi, I'm a long time fan from America. I'm trying to track down a copy of the original ‘Greatest Hits’ album on CD. It was available here for a brief time when CDs were brand new, but not for the last 10 or 15 years. Of course, when it was available, I didn't have a CD player. Anyone out there have one you're willing to part with? Name your price. Thanks. | | ‘Greatest Hits’ was released on CD by Atlantic Records in the USA around 1985 - for unknown reasons, this is the only CD release of ABBA’s first hits compilation. It’s long deleted, and one of the few CDs that seems to be very hard to find - for instance, it’s probably one of the few ABBA CDs that I’ve never seen listed on eBay. It seems that the few fans who have copies of this CD don't want to part with it! |

| Which synthesizer did Benny use on the introduction of ‘Head Over Heels’? I mean the harp/bell-like sound in the beginning. And which synthesizer did he use for the synsolo on ‘Under Attack’? Thanks. Best Frank | | I’m not really sure. There hasn’t been much technical detail written about ABBA’s recording techniques or the instruments that they used. During ABBA’s last few years, their sound was dominated by Benny’s huge Yamaha GX1 synthesiser. Though he used many other keyboard-based instruments during ABBA’s years. I don’t know whether the sounds you’re asking about were created with the GX1 or some other instrument. However, when ABBA performed 'Under Attack on television towards the end of 1982, Benny can be seen playing a small synth propped on top of his piano, but whether that's the instrument (or something similar) used on the track, I can't say. Perhaps someone with a musical ear out there knows more? |
