ABBAMAIL's Ian Cole was first to receive the Australian special edition of The Definitive Collection CD

Well, I got a surprise this afternoon!

I decided to leave work earlier than usual (cause I was bored, and cause it's my birthday, so why not?). Spontaneously, I decided to go and check my post office box.

And lo and behold, there was a parcel from Universal Music. Not DVD size, so obviously it wasn't an advance copy of the Definitive Collection DVD :(

While walking away from the post office, I open the parcel, and there was a copy of the Definitive Collection CD. In the slip case. Oh dandy, thinks I, just a couple of weeks ago I bought the EU version from HMV in Pitt Street (I got the US version last December). Only 9 months after release, Universal decide to send me a copy. Then I'm looking at the postpak, and there's a stamped advertisement for "Australia's finest new music star". Odd, I think, for that to be stamped on a parcel from Sweden. Then I look at the bottom of the mailing label - the return address is Universal Music Australia. How very very strange, I think.

So, still walking up the street, I take the CD out again. The back cover is facing me, and towards the bottom left corner there's the words "Australian Bonus Tracks", with Rock Me and Hasta Manana listed below. Considering I'd been told (by Carl Magnus Palm) that it wasn't being released in Australia until September (to coincide with the Mamma Mia! opening in Sydney), I was *most* surprised to be getting it in the mail today!

It looks pretty much like the EU version. The sticker on the front reads "Special Australian Only Edition/2CD - 39 Tracks/Including 2 bonus tracks/And a previously unreleased version of Voulez Vous/Deluxe booklet". The text is in black, like the EU version (the US version is white)

Discs and booklet are pretty much the same, except the notes for the two extra bonus tracks (Rock Me and Hasta Manana) are on the same page as the notes for the other 2 bonus tracks, opposite the photo from the Dick Cavett show. New Zealand fans will be delighted to know that the hit status of both songs in your country has been acknowledged ("top five" for Rock Me, and Top 10" for Hasta Manana). I guess it's a pity for you that this version isn't released in New Zealand (unless they re-release it). Sensibly, Hasta Manana was added to the list of "Andersson/Anderson/Ulvaeus" songs on the credits page towards the back of the book - something that didn't happen previously for the Australian editions of GOLD and MORE GOLD.

The back of the slipcase, jewel case and booklet list the release years of each song like the EU version, and unlike the US version which lists the track running times.

The now standard insert card advertises Mamma Mia! on both sides, rather than Mamma Mia! on one side and the ABBA catalogue on the other. One side has the usual bride ad, while the other has a photo of the Melbourne cast, and mentions that Mamma Mia! "is playing at the Lyric Theatre Star City in Sydney from 26 September 2002".

The catalogue number is 589 793-2. Weirdly, the catalogue number for disc one is 589 794-2, while the number for disc 2 is 549 976-2, the same as the EU/US versions. I guess because that disc is actually unchanged.

Universal Music Australia has informed me that The Definitive Collection CD and DVD will both be released in Australia on 9 September 2002.

Thanks to ABBAMAIL's Ian Cole in Sydney, Australia

It's the big ABBA day in Australia!

September 9, 2002!

Today, the Australian DVD and CD versions of "THE DEFINITIVE COLLECTION" were released.

Universal Music has produced a special full-colour cardboard presentation stand for record stores. It holds multiple copies of both the CD and DVD. It looks sensational.

Both the DVD and CD have been pressed in Australia rather than imported from overseas. As Ian Cole informed us some time ago, disc one of the CD has two extra tracks - Rock Me and Hasta Manana. Both tracks enjoyed considerable success in 1976 in Australia and that's why Universal Music Australia decided to included them on the Oz release.

From the Universal Music Australia (UMA) website:

"With tens of millions albums sold worldwide, it is hard to imagine that the development of popular music could have been the same had it not been for ABBA's almost complete domination of the Ô70's. In celebration of their continuing global success and the opening of the sell-out stage show Mamma Mia! in Sydney comes a completely new collection of ABBA's work. Abba - The Definitive Collection brings together for the first time the A-side single releases from 1972 to 1982 in their entirety. The collection also benefits from 2 digitally remastered bonus tracks, a single remix of Ring Ring and an extended US promo remix of Voulez Vous, previously unreleased. In addition, this Australian Only Edition features 2 'Aussie Only' hits in Rock Me and Hasta Manana."

The DVD is exactly the same except for the "E - EXEMPT FROM CLASSIFICATION" printed across the bottom of the cover. The booklet is the same and the Mamma Mia! advertisement under the disc is the same.

Prices one day one have been varied: The recommended retail price seems to be $34.95 for the CD and $39.95 for the DVD. However, at least one major department store is selling the CD for $37.95 and the DVD for $44.95! Discount chain "Big W" has a one week promotion on the DVD for $29.98 and the CD for $23.92.

If you are in Australia and want to buy the CD from "Big W" please check the cardboard slip cover before you buy. "Big W" CDs are sealed in hard clear-plastic security cases which are too small for The Definitive Collection's slip cover. The bottom of the slip cover is dented and damaged because of this. Check carefully!

HMV Sydney have a big display shelf of both the DVD and CD at the entrance to the shop. They also have copies of the 2001 remasters (jewel case) for $14.95.

The Definitive Collection has also been released on VHS video in Australia. Retail price is $24.95.

Mamma Mia! begins its Sydney run on September 26th and no doubt there's going to be a whole lot of cross promotion between the show and The Definitive Collection releases.

To co-incide with Mamma Mia! in Sydney, Universal have decided to "re-release" the original soundtrack CD. Nothing special about this one, it has already been available for a long time. Here's the blurb from the UMA website:

There's a buzz building in anticipation of the arrival of the new musical Mamma Mia! on Australian shores. Currently playing in London's West End, Toronto and Los Angeles, Mamma Mia! has broken all local box office records.

With music by the male half of the famous ABBA quartet Benny Anderson and Bjorn Ulvaeus, Mamma Mia! is an infectious evening of pure entertainment and riotous raucous fun.

Mamma Mia! concerns a young woman named Sophie and her single mother Donna, a former nightclub singer who runs a motel on a small Greek island. Sophie is about to get married and before she ties the knot, she wants to find out who her father is.

She invites three of her mother's old flames (each a candidate for paternity) to her wedding. From there the fun begins'

ABBAMAIL can only say hold on to your hats Aussie fans because it seems as if we're about to experience a wave of ABBA-mania all over again ;-)
