Celebrity child without advantage

Linda Ulvaeus feels most comfortable in roles that are a bit crazy. To play Honey in the theatre play "Vem är rädd för Virginia Woolf?" (="Who's afraid of Virginia Woolf?") fits her well.

-The challenge is to make the sorrow, anxiety and drunkenness believable, she says.

The tour throughout Sweden with the theatre production and classic "Vem är rädd för Virginia Woolf?" has been going on for almost a year. During the spring (February to April) it's being played at Lorensbergsteatern in Göteborg.

-I have room to grow in the role. And the teamwork with the others gives me a lot.

The play is somewhat of a modern classic but it has a great potential to appeal to people of all ages.

-There were many youths who saw the dress rehearsal in Stockholm and afterwards they were very enthusiastic. I think there's something in it for all ages, says Linda.

Honey is a goodhearted character who wants to please everybody. She has gone through several abortions.

-She's in a tragic situation. And in the end she breaks down. My performance is to make the sorrow believable.

Linda Ulvaeus has a long resume on stage behind her. She even participated in Colin Nutley's film "Under solen". But it's in the theatre she wants to be.

-Film is more of a luxury and a bonus. It's within the theatre that the jobs are. I long to get to do more complicated roles. Due to my looks, I've mostly been given young and childish roles.

She has been able to channel her anxiety through the theatre. She says that was one of the reasons why she got into acting.

-There has never been any other alternatives. This is the only thing I've strived to do, she says.

But to choose acting is still something she doesn't recommend.

-You have to be extremely devoted and prepared for things not going your way. In this occupation there are more setbacks than success. But as a hobby, the theatre is wonderful.

You may easily think that with Linda's last name and parents, the jobs would be handed to her on a silver platter. But it hasn't been that way.

-It feels as if I have had to work harder to get accepted. I have of course always had the eyes of the media on me.

When Linda applied to the stage school for the first time and wasn't accepted, she was given this explanation: "just because she's a celebrity child, she shouldn't think that she would be accepted on her first try".

-It was tough, she says. I have actually never had any advantage in my field of work because of my parents.

She doesn't see herself as a celebrity and it's rare that anyone recognizes her after performances.

-For me the acting work and fame aren't connected. It's a big advantage for me. The only thing I want is to deliver a message on the theatre stage.
